He said pick, so pick a place where you would like to eat. He may be asking you to pick a place to make you feel more secure, or because you know the area better than he does.

You pick a simple coffee shop or the like for a simple meet and greet.... then IF you decide you want to see each other for a REAL date or what ever... you can probably both figure the where and what out a bit easier...

If he was stupid enough to tell you to pick the place, teach that sap a lesson. Surely there are more expensive places around you than a Red Lobster. I assume he is paying so pick a restaurant you've never been to and could never afford to go to.

If Red Lobster is gold diggin' then I'd say that mine was tapped out a while ago.

If he acts like he's gonna have to stiff the wait staff then throw in a few bucks and mark the bun off the list.

He wants you to feel comfortable, and he wants to see what kind of place you're happy with. He may try to gauge if you're more interested in him or the place.

Offer to come over to his place and have him cook.

A. You get to see if hes actually useful.
B. You can probably tell by his apartment what his income is.
C> You can make sure hes single.
D. If it goes farther, there's a place to cuddle relax and watch a movie, or simply say good night and leave after dinner if it doesn't.

This will put him in a good mood, and you don't need to worry about any of the issue you listed in your OP.

ask him what kind of food he likes, and go from there.
just find a restaurant in the middle- not too expensive, not too cheap. like olive garden, ruby tuesdays, etc.

and if you still aren't sure just ask him! plan it together.

Red Lobster is high end?

I usually just choose a chain restaurant that is average in price. "How about Carrabba's...do you like Italian?"

It's just a suggestion. If he doesn't like it, he can make an alternate suggestion till you find some place you both like. I don't think he would be telling you to choose a place if he weren't prepared to take you up on a reasonable suggestion.

Your chances of meeting a psycho stalker are slim to none in the world of reality. However if he was, he wouldn't ask you where "You" wanted to meet him at to begin with. He would say, Why don't you come over to my place, or something. Unless he's smart and then he'll take you out to a restaurant for a couple of dates or public places till you feel secure, then once he's got you hooked, it's over.

A little common sense can help you determine the safety of a decision. And paranoia will never help you with any decision. If a serial killer want's to kill you, He or she, will find a way.

Just a head's up on the darker side of reality.

So excuses or no, what you think m\will help you avoid such a conflict wont, and that's the real terror about dating. You are f**ked either way if one finds you.

So don't let the possibility spoil your date. And have fun. Because in truth there is nothing you can do about it if it does.

i always think, the man should pay for the first date, but i never expect it. i will always have enough to cover, because i want him to be somewhat financially secure, but i as well should be able to offer the same in my opinion. Picking out a restaurant is the least of the worries to being financially secure though.

This is true, we do. We would not ask you to pick if we thought we would not be able to handle the decision, and if afterwords we couldn't we'd simply say I can't afford that right now what about some place a little cheaper.

Another thing about this, If we ask you to pick DO NOT pick a place that you think we will like simply to please us. I HATE this. If I ask you to pick a place, pick a place YOU will like, same with movies. If I wanted to pick something I liked Iwould.

everyone should have a favorite diner or coffee shop picked out, even before you even think about accepting or making a date.

some place you feel comfortable, to meet and get to know them first.

To clarify, I do not live in a big city. Red Lobster is about as high end as we have in a chain you would recognize and it is in the town where he lives. He was coming to my town that day anyway, so it was smart that it be around here. We have a Starbuck's but I feel stupid paying that much for coffee and just don't go there. What made it awkward was that it was going to be in the evening about supper time, and he was talking about meeting for coffee, not dinner. We ended up at Luby's with pie and coffee.

And I do think some men don't like it when you throw a simple decision back on them, so I felt compelled to make one cuz it wasn't rocket surgery.

I do this also.

1. They are the places I prefer to frequent anyhow.
2. I like small cozy family owned non chain locations
3. The prices are usually quite reasonable.
4. The food is often better
5. It's much more authentic most the time.

I simply ask what kind of food they like, then I pick.

A nice little street cafe in the City of Light! You got your passport up to date, right?

lol, just always pick something you can afford normally. That's a good guideline, since going out together long term would be about shared lifestyles. I find it's always best to go with something interesting to make it special rather than something you might have to budget for. Venues that are special because they're somewhat financially exclusive are better for things like anniversaries, because for regular working folk you have to budget a couple of weeks around them. Early dates should be easier than that, being interesting in atmosphere or environment rather than exclusive.

So pick something interesting, fun seeming. For example a simple cafe is interesting if it's in a gallery foyer, say.
