I Don't Give A Rat's Ass - 101
by sireena at 11/29/2012 9:29:21 AM

What has happened to America? Seriously! The schools need to incorporate a class that teaches young people to “turn the other cheek” and leave those who want to “believe” in traditions…ALONE!

Atheists want to outlaw Christmas. Is the sight of a Christmas tree really so offensive? How about the Nativity Scene? Offensive?

My daughter attended an elementary school that had less than 5% of the students that would be considered “non-Christian”. A couple of people complained that OUR American Historically relevant celebrations “offend” them. The answer: No more Christmas parties, no more costumes on Halloween, no Easter…etc. etc. Can someone explain to me how this absurd attempt to be “inclusive” which results in the vast majority compromising for the few is fair?

Now I’m no bible thumper…never have been, never will be. But Christmas has been a part of my culture my entire life. I have also embraced, appreciated and respected holidays that other “religions” choose to celebrate. I am in no way “offended” by Hanukkah or Kwanza or any other loving manner that people choose to celebrate whatever it is they choose to.

The majority of current college students agree with this line of thinking (among many other absurdities that I won’t address right now)…that Christmas should not be a recognized government holiday and the “practice” of Christmas should be “renamed” or not celebrated at all. So much for “teaching” acceptance, tolerance and the friggin ability to just NOT GIVE A SHIT about something that has nothing to do with YOU! If you don’t want to celebrate Christmas…then don’t! What is the big deal?

Outlaw Christmas and the following will happen:

There will be no “Christmas” break for students
There will be no paid holiday for employees (or time ½ for those who do work)
The retailers would financially suffer, hence a negative effect on the economy
Nonprofit agencies that rely on the “giving” that occurs during the Christmas holidays would suffer (hence the poor would receive less)
Families that are separated by miles would see each other less as many travel during this time to see each other
A tradition that millions consider a joyous and loving time of year would be lost.

This is just to name a few, there would be more fall-out.

The bigger question and concern here…it’s just a matter of time before EVERYTHING we do will be alleged to be offensive to someone! Some cultures don’t celebrate birthdays…so perhaps birthday celebrations will be “outlawed”. Easter of course would be the next “unrecognized” holiday. Perhaps Independence Day will be found “offensive” to the foreigners who come here…no more fireworks…and then of course it just follows that Thanksgiving shouldn’t be recognized either. The Muslim population may start to raise issues about the manner in which our women dress…skirts, high heels, tank tops….watch out, we’ll all be in Burkas! Do these people NOT see the danger of this “all inclusive” bull shit rant? What emerges is essentially one “group” of people dictating to other “groups” what is acceptable (to them) and what is not and killing American traditions.

The irony? These are the very same zealots who want EVERYONE to embrace same sex marriage, they advocate for tax payer funded abortions as a form of birth control, they want to punish the job producers by over taxation to the wealthy (it’s now politically incorrect to be rich).

I personally do not GARA (give a rat’s ass) if you want to kill your unborn child, I just don’t want my hard earned tax dollars paying for it. Here’s a novel idea…learn how to properly use BIRTH CONTROL and if you are too stupid to do that…practice abstinence!

I don’t GARA if you want to “marry” someone of the same sex. I will accept it. Just don’t expect me to embrace, encourage, be financially responsible for and or advocate for homosexuality. Being “gay” does not make you “special” any more than being heterosexual makes me “special”.

I don’t GARA if you are too lazy to work, just don’t expect a tax payer “hand out” for the rest of your natural life. This goes for the dead beats on disability as well for being too physically unfit (overweight) or drug addicts or anyone else who is “disabled” due to a self-inflicted habit...AKA…a choice YOU made!

I’ve never seen so many double standards by a country led by an administration who has come to hate this great country and seeks to flush any and all sense of morality and personal responsibility down the toilet right along with our constitution. Adolf Hitler would be so proud! Just think…that moron Sandra Fluke may very well be Time Magazine’s “Person of the Year”. Good grief…if she is the best thing this world can turn out we are all so very FLUCKED!

Peace.............

I have the opinion that if something offends you don't make everyone suffer. If you don't want to celebrate or partake in certain things then ask to be exempt. You shouldn't force your beliefs or opinions on others.

Absolutely Bob! I have no issue with assisting those who are truly in need and/or giving a hand up rather than a hand out to those who are going through a rough patch. The statistics speak for themselves. We are in the process of becoming a "nanny state" and the sense of personal responsibility and pride are disappearing!

I hear what you're saying I never understood that either - how the few become the ruler of the many - kind of defeats the whole Democratic theory. There is no excuse for the way that this country is turning out. Try not to offend Has turned this country into a bunch of weak kneed, spineless, a** kissing liberal, sheep being lead to the slaughter.

I agree with almost everything you said, I do however disagree with the do what you want I'll leave you alone theory.... That's how America has been sent straight to Hell in a hand basket. Without standing up against those things that made this country what is, is just like saying o.k. screw me I don't care.... come back tomorrow and do it again I don't mind.

We need to stop all the BS and fight for what we believe in..

Fran...I think America had it's chance to "fight back" on November 6th. Unfortunately, the majority ruled and this is what we get for at least 4 more years. I pray that we don't actually experience a civil war in American. But it is a possibility that I thought I would never see in my lifetime!

I am in the mindset these days of "I dont give a poop what they do up there in Washington" The blame for what is happening in this Country or what used to be this Country is directly on the Republicans...! all those Republicans who for reasons of their own did not feel that this Country was worth saving and just decided not to cast their vote in the most important election in this Country's history..We are way past fixing it now...now we must live with what we have wrought until somewhere down the line (years from now probably) some brave heroic people begin to take freedom back the hard way...Perhaps our grandchildren will be a part of that...I hope so...

As for the political points made here, many of the problems America face today are not problems brought on by the Obama admin. Most of us are not on a level where decisions made at that level affect us immediately as soon as they are made. With that being said, some decisions were made 4 years ago, 8 years ago, 12 years ago that have a lingering affect. I'm not big on either party democratic or republican, b/c all of them are politicians who have their best interest at heart. So after 4 years and a new president takes office we will continue to see a country in turmoil. Majority say that Obama should lead the country for 4 more years. It's my opinion that if he hadn't done anything to help anyone, no one would have voted for him. Romney won my state, his views (education) are not congruent with my opinion. I don't depend on tax dollars to take care of me. I work countless hours each day/night to take care of my children. At the end of the day, my daughter will need assistance to get a great education to be what she inspires to be. As hard as I work I won't be able to afford a college tuiton by simply writing one check to pay for 4-6 years of higher education. Maybe some of you can, I can't..... So politicians and politics will never gain control of America, b/c we are One Nation but very divided......

I didnt think I was going to log on to DH today. I have been back and forth reading offline, and it seems to be the same old same old...Then along came a Sireena Blog I have watched the demise of freedom to celebrate Christmas (Christ's Birth) little by little for a long time..They bring other Holidays onto the scene and I dont have a problem with that, but to deny a creche because it offends a slight minority is insane...Its not Happy Holidays, its Merry Christmas...and it has been Merry Christmas to me for the 72 years that I am alive, and if that makes me politically INCORRECT, then I wear that title proudly. I pray to My Creator for the Political leaders of this country that fall under the pressure of those few who it offends, to please not take this most Holy Time away from Christians.........I have celebrated Kwaanzaa with my black friends...Hanukkah with my Jewish friends and they have Celebrated Christmas with me,,,,Its a respect thing as far as I am concerned...SO, If you believe in nothing can you please just respect what others believe in, it costs you nothing and who knows what you may gain if you just become a little more tolorant....PEACE AND BLESSING TO YOU ALL, NO MATTER WHAT YOU BELIEVE

@quietstormz, you make some valid points. I think what is different now vs. the past is a collective desire to be inclusive to the point that it's become absurd! I voted for Obama in 2008. One of my wishes was to see a black president during my lifetime. I embraced and supported him but was sorely disappointed in his failure to lead America. There are those who continue to "blame" past administration/s but that argument falls flat with me. He is the president and as such, he SHOULD have the ability to convince others to compromise (both dems and repubs)and formulate plans that are in the best interest of ALL Americans.

That said, none of us will likely agree with every position any one candidate has. Obama's heart appeared to be in the right place concerning many things. But he too has been jaded by those who financially support him and has become "power hungry" in this process.

I don't know what his interior motive is (Obama). What I do know is this: I was an administrator at a high school for 6 years. The head administrator I worked for was great, but 3 years after he took the position the school saw a need to go in a different direction. It wasn't his fault that the 9th grade class he inherited as 10th graders were already use to doing things "their" way. Dropping out, attendance issues, and behavior problems were all cited as reason they said they needed to move in a different direction. He could not undo what someone else had done just by being there for a year. Well guess what, his second year was not much better. Now he had 11th graders who had not changed and would be there another year if they didn't decide to drop out before then, which if they dropped out those statistics would fall upon his reign. Totally not fair to him. They guy they hired did not fix things but after being their for 6 years and having the opportunity to start with the freshman class and seeing them succeed as seniors and then guiding another freshman class to much success, they now believe that it takes time to make change. If you inherit problems, you have to put out firs before you actually install measures to produce change. I say this in closing: If you adopt a child who was born with addiction, in foster care for a few years before you adopt the child. You get the child at age 9. They are in the 2nd grade, a year behind, and is totally disruptive in school. Should you stop trying, as everyone at the school has pretty much reached their tolerant level with the child? Should you continue to instill moral/values that will eventually become a foundation? Do you think it would be fair for the school to blame you for not being able to make this child demonstrate orderly behavior?

Hi everyone! Well I feel like everyone should basically be able to hold what's dear to them without it being taken away. I don't follow the Christian belief system but I respect it and those who hold it dear to their hearts.

11/29/2012 11:35:36 AM

@quietstormz...what I believe in is "tough love" so to speak. Of course change is difficult to achieve but when something...anything...does not give even a slight improvement and in fact becomes worse, it's time to try something different. What I have NOT heard from Obama is a plan that is any different from the past four years.

Using your education experience as an example, I would pose the following: Put the duty of "parenting" back on the parent. If a student acts up at school, there need to be immediate and severe consequences both at home and at school. Without consequences that they can feel, people will continue to engage in the same behavior. This is one of the first things you learn as a parent and it's NOT rocket science! Pat a thief on the head and they will steal your hat!

@ sireena, good points. This admin had prinicples in place that were effective. It wasn't until he got the bad apples so to speak out of the bunch that progress could be made. For him the 10th graders who had established a foundation the year before where the admin was weak, cost him his job. OAN- if Obama is terrible, guess what the next president inherits.....if it took 8 years to create a mess, how long should the next have to fix it?

Bravo Rox...such good points and I couldn't agree with you more. We're turning into a bland, dull, vanilla society controlled by the government. There must be a book about this somewhere...LOL. Another recent common practice is that of awarding all kids a trophy whether they win or not. That might seem like an insignificant gripe but nothing stifles competition more. Our whole economic system is based on competition...for jobs, contracts, products, etc. Take away the desire and inspiration to be better at something and nothing gets better. There will be no need to put superior products on the shelves for consumers because the manufacturers will be rewarded simply for making the products. Everything is turning to absolute shit and because of those kinds of attitudes developed in our youth today no one will ever strive to excel. What an absolute shame! And now they want jerk Christmas around? They can all go **** themselves!

You are right on target Sireena. Now for my two cents. I think that the people that are Christians are in the majority so why should the minority make such a big stink- if they are offended by anything Christian, they do not have to participate. If you see a sign, Merry Christmas or a Nativity scene and you are offended, then dont LOOK at it. If you are in a room where people are saying a prayer and you do not approve, walk out of the room. If you do not believe in God, do not criticize the ones that do. I am sure one of these days, you will not see In God We Trust on any of our currency because a FEW people will be offended by those words. I would like to also offer my two cents worth regarding politics but will save those remarks for a rainy day as it is beautiful here in NW PA.

For many Americans, Christmas is one of the most joyous times of the year. It’s a time for families and friends to gather together, and for many Christians it is one of the holiest days of the year. White Christmas, Miracle on 34th Street, A Christmas Carol, It's A Wonderful Life, A Charlie Brown Christmas, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Elf: Christmas images and stories have themselves, in a variety of ways, become part and parcel of American culture. Local businesses value Christmas not only because of the spirit of the season, but because it contributes to the busiest and most profitable shopping time of the year. Unlike Ebenezer Scrooge's counting house in 19th century London, American stores, businesses, museums, and government offices are typically closed on December 25th. Even the ACLU closes on Christmas! [For an ACLU expression of Christmas cheer, read this USA Today op-ed.] In recent years, culturally conservative commentators have declared that there is a so-called “war on Christmas,” and in many cases have claimed that the ACLU is leading the charge. This simply isn’t true. Religious expression is a valued and protected part of the First Amendment rights guaranteed to us all. Christmas is pervasive in America, and, except when the government is being used to promote religious beliefs, it is entirely constitutional. While Christmas displays are being placed in front of homes, churches, and businesses across the country, and as carolers go door-to-door with songs of Christmas cheer, these culture warriors say that Christmas is being removed from all public mention and persist with such declarations about a "war on Christmas." The constitutional rights of people to worship, preach, sing carols, and celebrate Christmas in their churches and with their families and friends — whether in public or in private — is well-protected. The ACLU itself has brought several cases on behalf of people who want to celebrate Christmas. The real question is not whether people can celebrate Christmas (they most certainly can), but whether the government should be promoting religious beliefs and practices (it most certainly shouldn't). When the smoke of battle clears, Christmas is completely safe. Seperation of church and state is clear in our constitution, majority rule doesn't change that.

11/29/2012 1:55:07 PM

I agree with you. Life is becoming more and more absurd. If history is like a pendulum that swings back and forth, twenty or thirty years from now may find society becoming more permissive again (as in the days of free love, hippies, and a vibrant drug culture.) If you live long enough, I think you'll see almost anything...

sireena
11/29/2012 2:12:36 PM

Penny, there are those that want Christmas removed from the calendar as a recognized government holiday along with the public display of anything "Christmas" by the Feds, State or City government. If that were to happen, the display of same said decorations in our own house/yard would soon be put on the table as well. Or you would be fined, taxed or ostracized for doing so. It may seem safe...but I thought holiday parties at a school for little kids was too...it wasn't. Mr. Obama, I think, would change many things in the consitition if he could and he may just try as well....that said, I'm not sure he's buying into the "Christmas hate" (at least not publicly).

Sireena, please re-read the last sentence: Christmas is completely safe. Seperation of church and state is clear in our constitution, majority rule doesn't change that. By the way I love Christmas. I don't want it in any Government establishments, including public schools. In recent years, we have heard the Republican candidates spew out the ideas that we need to get this country back to its roots. By this they mean that we need to get this country back to its christian roots. They want us to pass legislation based on Christian ideals. They claim that we are a “Christian Nation” and that we were founded on christianity. The republican candidates can spew hatred and say this country was founded on christianity and that we need god in politics. I just want to ask them; didn’t you go to college and learn about our founding fathers and the constitution? If you payed attention you would know that our founding fathers were devout secularists and freethinkers who wanted no part of christianity in our government. These people basically are attempting to rewrite this countries history into one that would support their cause. First of all, our national was founded on the freedom of religion. People came to this newly founded land to escape religious persecution. When the Constitution was being written, the founding fathers were adamant that it would be based on reason, not on religion. Even if you didn’t know anything about the founding fathers, the fact that there is NO mentions of “Jesus, Christianity, Bible, Creator or God,” proves that they did not want any form of religion in our Constitution.

How did the Pilgrims celebrate Christmas hmmmm? let's see... Did the Puritans Celebrate Christmas? The residents of early New England were strongly influenced by the traditions of Calvinism and the routine of the established Congregational church, honoring hard work and stern independence, which were interpreted as self-sufficiency. They were proud of observing Thanksgiving as the most important day of the year and self-righteous in refusing to observe Christmas day, which they considered an emblem of the Roman Catholic Church. The Presbyterians, Quakers and Baptists also followed the teachings of John Calvin and chose not to celebrate Christmas. It was a day when farmers slaughtered hogs and farm wives dipped their candles. "It was remembered," wrote Samuel Goodrich, that the cellar of his family's house in Connecticut "had been dug in a single day, and that day was Christmas." The Puritans also believed that since the fourth commandment strictly forbade work and play on one day, it implicitly sanctioned them on all others. Scripture commanded the Sabbath, but nothing more. The Puritans took it one step further. They felt that there should be no time allowed for play and frolicking, no matter what day it was. Christianity had given at one time or another special status to 165 days a year. The Puritans felt this was too many and that celebrating any one of them might open the door to idleness, a vice to be suppressed and not encouraged by the church. The thought of setting aside some days as holy offended the Puritans. They felt that one day was not holier than another. This smugness infuriated both Anglicans and Catholics. The Puritans argued that "they for whom all days are holy can have no holiday." Eighteenth Century New England associated Christmas with royal officials, external interference in local affairs and improper behavior. Celebrations on December 25 had become a symbol of all the things that threatened New England's holy mission. In contrast, the Catholics, Anglicans, Dutch Reformed and Lutherans had the choice of celebrating Christmas. In New England, if they did choose to celebrate, they celebrated very quietly.
kayterry

11/29/2012 2:38:32 PM

There was not much display of any Christmas celebrations. The magistrates of New England forbade the "anticks" of Christmas such as decorations, parties and gift-giving and those who partook in any of these festivities could be prosecuted for disturbing the peace. And thusly we have seperation of church and State now...The pilgrims seemed a bit tougher on religions than poor old Obama. A beautiful tree was delivered to the White House last week by the way.

And finally... Cultural Intimidation by the Religious Right The Christian Right's war against America's pluralistic society is not waged by politics alone. Over the past three decades, conservative evangelicals have fought aggressively to bring their brand of Christianity into the public schools and the public square. They also have waged a campaign to make their worldview an acceptable - if not yet dominant - force in mainstream culture. Bullying minorities into accepting public display of Christianity is not "unconstitutional." But it is definitely chilling, especially to Jews who hear in the triumphalism of the religious right echoes of Nazi street thuggery. It is also a saddening reversal of the diversity our society was achieving in recent years. This section of the JewsOnFirst website is dedicated to covering the frontlines of the culture wars. You'll find links to stories about the increasing inroads religious conservatives are making in media coverage, movies and TV --and, most frightening of all, their efforts to inculcate and recruit children to become "foot soldiers for Christ".

sireena
11/29/2012 2:49:32 PM

Actually, there are 50 Christmas trees in the white house along with a sculpture of the family dog????

With all due respect, the first sentence in the constitution contains the word "blessings" and there are several inferences to a religious foundation throughout although specific words as you eluded to are not included. Our currency states "In God We Trust". The Pledge of Allegiance states "One Nation, Under God". So there are definite Christian roots in our history that prevail today.

I hesitate to rehash the past as it's important to focus on the present and future. I see what I see and those who are raising the loudest arguments, argue that by government buildings and cities displaying anything "Christmas" is actually a violation of the constitution as they view it as "promoting" Christianity. My larger point with this blog is that these groups are becoming more powerful and thus influential. There is danger on the horizon if these zealots are allowed to actually continue in their pursuit of "reforming" American culture. JMO

sireena you truly might consider running for office..What I find sad is, what/who is a navity,a Christmas tree,a tree lighting hurting?. If you don't have the same beliefs than don't...No-one is asking anyone to become a part of what they don't believe in....And yes this country was loved and respected because he had Christian Roots....The downfall of our nation is because they have been pushed aside and Our Lord has started to remove many of the blessing we so freely recieved....Im not asking anyone to be a part of my beliefs...but what I truly don't understand is "just because they don't believe, they are bitter, angry and can't put aside their differences. We as christians didnt have a choice of putting aside our beliefs, they were and are being taken from us.....JMO

Kona, there is no one religiion that is better than any others. All regligions are Equal in this Country is my POINT. I tried to point out that from the Pilgrims to the Founding Father's reglion is not to be used as a bulldozers over others just because you're in the majority. It does feel like nazi thuggery to me frankly when I see creches in front of Government Bldgs. If we don't keep this fundamental seperation, the rest of us who don't worshop your gods will find ourselves perhaps one day in a concentration camp or a reeducation facility. Something akin to the Christian right's gay camps to try and make gay teens straight. No thanks, celebrate your holidays in your HOME AND YOUR CHURCH.

penny I'd say welcome back but just can't bring myself to do it. As I said on your blog...if you don't want to celebrate Christmas then by all means don't. As Sireena said...who gives a rats ass. But then whatever you celebrate don't call it Christmas. My friends and family will get Christmas cards and send Christmas cards. You send whatever you want. You don't really have a point and you will fail at convincing any christian that Christmas is a generic holiday. And if you think any of us is so stupid that we don't know Jesus wasn't born on December 25 you're way off your rocker. It's simply the day we celebrate. And who the hell said all religions weren't equally welcome? No one! But again...if you don't believe in Christ don't celebrate Christmas. For all I care you can wrap yourself in lights and shove a candle up your azz and call it pennymas.

Zealots reforming American culture? No, still just trying to keep Church and State seperate. Which is getting harder and harder to do because of the Religoius zealots infringing on my right to see my government as secular and not run by religion. That my minority rights aren't bulldozed by the majority. And just because you are the majority does not make you better, greater or a more noble American citizen. Keep religion out of the Governemnt. And as for Under God, 1954 Eisenhower, as pointed barb in the cold war against the Russians, it was not originally written with that phrase in it. Know why it was even written to beging with? I'll tell you to sell flags. The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy (1855–1931), who was a Baptist minister, a Christian socialist,[3] and the cousin of socialist utopian novelist Edward Bellamy (1850–1898). The original "Pledge of Allegiance" was published in the September 8 issue of the popular children's magazine The Youth's Companion as part of the National Public-School Celebration of Columbus Day, a celebration of the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas. The event was conceived and promoted by James B. Upham, a marketer for the magazine, as a campaign to instill the idea of American nationalism by selling flags to public schools and magazines to students. Bellamy's original Pledge read as follows:[8][9] I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Students swearing the Pledge on Flag Day in 1899 The Pledge was supposed to be quick and to the point. Bellamy designed it to be recited in 15 seconds. As a socialist, he had initially also considered using the words equality and fraternity[7] but decided against it - knowing that the state superintendents of education on his committee were against equality for women and African Americans.[10]

penny you need to stay off the internet and form some independent ideas
kayterry

11/29/2012 4:11:26 PM

These are my IDEAS, as stated in my own blog. I am not a great speller and not eloquent. Therefore, I use the internet to express my ideas. My ideas are independent, as you can see, I'm the only one disagreeing on here. And I was the one told that I got mad when people didn't agree with me on my blogs. I don't think Sirrena needs defending, she does a very good job all on her own.

Christmas aside Penny...how does killing a fetus because the mother doesn't like the "sex" of the baby have anything to do with religion or government? Killing is killing...I step on an ant..it dies. You can't "redefine" the notion of death. It is what it is. You can't argue (logically) one way but have it another. The zealots are self serving propagandanites that see no value in morality at all!

Once again my attention to detail(blocking certain people every time they show up)pays off in keeping my blood pressure down and a smile on my face.It feels SOOOOOOOOOO good not to see the SHIT some people post.

Mr Cats...I'm seriously considering blocking as well. I'm not interested in copy/paste BS from the internet. @Reenie...you ask penny her opinion on anything and the answer you'll get will be copied from something she googles. God bless google penny! hahahahahaha! I don't need to read BS from people who can't think on their own...hahahahaha

The internet is an infinite universe of ideas, viewpoints and mindsets, with every possible degree voiced, written and inmost instances legitimized with seemingly foolproof evidence. So you can find what ever you hope to convey in the vast reaches of the internet and "flesh" it out with back up diatribe. What you DO have to ponder however is if you personal life and your interaction with others is benefitted by your discourse...When tromping all over the beliefs and traditions of others , is your life enhanced...Or, are you and your likewise thinking minority just spreading some toxic pall that ultimately poisons even the spewer....

You are trying to reason with a person who , by her own admission suffered childhood trauma that has left her combatative and unable to form any relationship with family friends or lovers...She stands in an attack mode to anyone male or female who demonstrate any empathy or warmth and a normal loving attitude...She has sid outright that she is only here to harass for this month and then off to some other venture. Toxic people DO exist and no amount of reasoning will clear that muck that surrounds them...Rather than feed that toxicity and have it poison you, it is better to just ignore and let them go about their adventures in nastiness somewhere else. Even Jesus said of these people, "walk away from them, do not cast your pearls before swine, just shake the dust of your meeting off your shoes and turn away from them" (paraphrased)
