GREYHOUNDS make absolutly wonderful pets!!! Ofcourse, they are by no means a "small breed", but are much calmer, laid back & easy going than the smaller breeds. They are referred to a "45 mph couch potato" dog. And ALOT of them need rescuing. Whippets and Italian greyhounds are nice, and not quite as large, and can be a little anxious, but not yappy at all. Very little in means of grooming also.

I am partial to Austrailian Shepherds, but you have to know temperments when picking a puppy, as you can end up with an extremely "active" one... others are more laid back.
And they aren't too big, nor too small. I have 2, my mom has 3.

Smaller breeds that I prefer are Poms, ShihTzus, Bischons, and yes, poodles... They are very smart dogs! But can be on the yappy side if not well socialized (which happens ALOT with little dogs... people "coddle" and "baby" them too much, which makes them nervous little nippers and yappers). Stay clear of Schnauzers... they are flippin' obnoxious and over vocal!!

I am an experienced dog trainer & behavior specialist, and know breed temperments well.

Please feel free to email me with any questions!

Love the look of the Italian greyhounds, but the one I was around was very high strung. I did see a breeder
in Dog Fancy saying they (this particular kennel) were breeding the Min. australian shep to diminish the herding gene. I had
German Sheps in my 30's and love this breed, so loyal and smart, but need a small dog now,
Any comments on Tibetian Spaniels, Mexican Hairless (the coated pups, there is a breeder for
pets south of Sacramento who breeds the coated dogs), Shiba Inus or Italian Spitz?

My own "eye" is attracted more to elegance, short coat, prick ears. Would love to find a long legged
deer chi, saw one in Monterey once and he was quite a doggie, not hyper, not yappy, jus
t active and funny, and a one person dog. I had a chow when I was a teenager and loved
the way they adore their owners but indifferent to the rest of the world.

Thanks for any advice and comment in advance,
alice

The Shiba Inu''s are very nice & pretty little dogs, as well as the Basenji.... especially the Basenji if you like that "aloof" type personality, being a one-owner type dog. They don't bark and require very little grooming. Not sure if you've seen one, but they are quite similar to the Shiba's. Very "Chow and Akita-like" in personality!

The Mexican Hairless dogs... I've only been around a couple of them, and I really don't like to comment on a breed unless I've experienced a few of them first hand... I don't like giving a "text book" opinion about a breed. The one's I've been around are quiet, fairly social and very loyal to their human.

The Italian greyhounds I've always been around seem so quiet and shy, which goes to show, you can't judge a dog by breed alone. All of them have different personalities, like people... a person cannot just catagorize a breed. I've seen more c*cker spaniels bite more often than pitbulls, and more pitbulls sweet as what one would think a c*cker spaniel should be! lol

Now there's another good breed... Pitbulls. Personally, I love them. As I've said, they are very sweet dogs when raised properly. They do have a very high "prey drive", which causes most of the problems these dogs have been given a bad rap for... so sad. And no, their jaws don't "lock"... they just have tremendous bite "pressure". They are typical tenatious terriers and need alot of brain stimulation or they get bored and become destructive... like any dog, really... but these guys need to be challenged and made to think.

Dobermans are awesome, and very, very smart and loyal. So very loyal!! Easy coat to maintain, and no, their brains do not out grow their skulls and cause them to go crazy... old wives tale that people still actually believe.

My sis use to breed German Shepherds... nice dogs, if they are imported from Germany. So sad that they've been so over bred in the states... lots of hip dysplasia and bone refinement in the American bred dogs. Same with the Rottweiler & Doberman.

As many have suggested, adopting from the ASPCA is a great idea... and usually, the dog will pick YOU, instead of you picking the dog... LOL. But if you want a specific breed, you are going about it in the correct way!! Cheers to you for that! I wish I could go with you to look at dogs/puppies to do a personality evaluation... kinda lets you know what kind of dog you're getting. But it sounds like you have a good solid knowledge of dogs already!

Keep us posted and the questions coming!!

Stacie

PS I haven't heard of the Italian Spitz, but I have heard of the Finnish Spitz... beautiful dogs, but have NO clue as to their temperments... have never been around any. They aren't seen alot in this area. Sorry!

Thank you, will continue mulling things over and keeping an open mind.

I went to a large all-breed dog show and really enjoyed it. In fact, I stayed to the Best of Show,
got so interested.

By the way, I am a cat person, active in Ocicat breed club, attend many cat shows, so if you
are curious about any of the cat breeds, I can probably answer them.

And yes, I am member of SPCA, Humane Society, and when I pass away, my house will go
to SPCA. I happen to think we can do both..... help the discarded pets by adoption and money,
and support pedigreed pets as well. In fact, I know a cat breeder who gives a rescued
(neutered and shots) FREE to anyone buying one of her cats, and the cats have lived
together and so at least tolerate one another! Now, there is a great concept!
