I have a dear friend who has a habit of trying to make me look like a fool just in front of men.

She will purposely make comments in front of male strangers (Its always guys our age) that will make her look better or more successful than myself. She will also try to make comments that will somehow make me look foolish or stupid. Its not necessary for me to say anything to her while this takes place because the guys always take notice to her comments and think she is being rude. They typically ignore her or stop talking to her once she has offended me. I know that she knows she is aware of what she is doing afterwards because she typically later apologizes somehow. She will say for example, "sorry, I hope that you didn't misunderstand what I said back there."

I understand why she behaves this way. She has been single for nearly four years and feels lonely. I have tried helping her out with this issue but she is extremely picky and wont budge on her idea of a perfect mate. I have exhausted my effort helping her.

What have others done to get past competition with friends?...In all honesty, she is a great girl and a great friend. Her loneliness explains her behavior but does not excuse it. Any suggestions? Thanks for any help that I may receive.

Thanks flower...I typically am just myself...more guys ask me to dance or talk to me after they see her attitude. Sometimes that seems to work against me though because it will piss her off even more at times.

We are roommates but I have had to limit my outside activity with her because she has made a habit of insulting me in front of guys and its only guys...nobody else.

Ex. We went to purchase a board game at some shop a month ago. The sales clerk (a guy our age) showed us a modified scrabble game. She said, "there is a game that you might actually beat me at for a change." I don't know why she said it though...the only game she ever beat me at was scrabble because I beat her in EVERYTHING else. The guy gave her a really confused look. Later, she said..."well you do actually always beat me at cribbage." I know that she was trying to redeem herself somehow.

edit for spelling

That actually makes me feel a lot better that guys don't care and can see past it for the most part...It was irritating at first but then I got used to it. I wondered if I should say something but then decided I should just limit my activities with her.
