Manure... An interesting fact

Manure: In the 16th and 17th centuries, everything had to be transported by ship and it was also before commercial fertilizer's invention, so large shipments of manure were common.

It was shipped dry, because in dry form it weighed a lot less than when wet, but once water (at sea) hit it, it not only became heavier, but the process of fermentation began again, of which a by product is methane gas. As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles you can see what could (and did) happen.

Methane would begin to build up below decks and the first time someone came below at night with a lantern, BOOOOM!
Several ships were destroyed in this manner before it was determined just what was happening

After that, the bundles of manure were always stamped with the term 'Ship High In Transit' on them, which meant for the sailors to stow it high enough off the lower deck s so that any water that came into the hold would not touch this volatile cargo and start the production of methane.

Thus evolved the term ' S.H.I.T ' (Ship High In Transport) which has come down through the centuries and is in use to this very day.

You probably did not know the true history of this word.

reminded me of when I worked at winter quarters ( Ringling Bros ) in Venice a few years ago. When the shows were in this one farmer was always there with his pick-up getting elephant droppings......word was (and proven) he had the best tomatoes, etc. in the area

and that is no 'chit

I love learning little facts like that! Never know when that topic comes up in conversation!
I like sheep, rabbit and llama manure because it doesn't smell.

That is the truth.
Later, in George Washingtons time, manure was still a hot item of trade. He wrote some impressive recommendations being particularly partial to horse manure.
Perhaps with the price of fuel these days... the initiative to stable-ize the economy, encourage folks to ride their horses to town on the weekends more frequently, help set up some sort of stabling in your town where horses might spend a few hours safe...
Then follow the former presidents wise advice and get the manure to the people who need it!
Lot of towns these days have community gardens...
Thank you, George... and thank you poppirocco!... and you guys with the shovel and wheelbarrow full of compost... easy on the potato area.

Geep, your story made me laugh. Many years ago while we lived in Titusville, Fl. in a subdivision, a small circus performed at the school complex. Well, the elephants left behind a small treasure. My kids were so embarrassed they refused to even acknowledge they knew me when I took trashbags and scooped it up to put on the roses. I've never had such blooms on everything, but especially the roses. My kids still remind me of it today. HE HE.

Lots of zoos here in Texas and I'm sure other places, sell Zoo Poo for cheap. If I knew it was just elephant, I'd buy it.

Horse manure is excellent for plants but being the horses don't digest all the seeds it can cause problems with seeds but overall is a great manure and excellent for improving poor soils.

It never ceases to amaze me what one can learn in these threads...thanks for the lesson on S.H.I.T.On a slightly different vein...Here in Amish country most of the stores have hitching racks for all their Amish customers and as a result have large amounts of horse manure every week that the stores pay someone to remove. I'll have to try some on my tomatoes next year...thanks for the tip.

I agree, they do not digest it like a cow does (cud). So the cow manure is far better. Best yet, chicken is the best but it will burn stuff if you put to much on. They do sell human manure and disguise the name far more than you realize!!!

Horses eat the grass closer to the ground and horse manure has seeds in it, so it is better for gardens and plants.

Thanks for the S.H.I.T. lesson ..
I raise meat rabbits and if I was to let everyone who wants the manure come and get it my rabbit house would be constantly clean ..

CopperMare,
Have you actually had stories or read of human manure sold in the US, even disguised... for fertilizer?

I remember Dad's fotos from when I was young, after the Korean War, we lived in Japan... and the wagon came around Japanese parts... collecting the honey buckets...

...they had some raw human goodies on their farm produce and the US families were warned about the possibility of problems.

...3rd world import foods may have human manure... a valuable commodity... in or as the fertilizer... under their laws... and hidden from our inspections... money talks!

...there ie a first class book on the use of it.... tho not suggested for loose comercial applications...
here it is:
Humanure
It is a good read.. even if you would never!
Talks of the varieties of parasites and what it takes to be assured that they do not survive to infect the food eaters...
Also is about low impact toilet alternatives... and how to do it in a sanitary manner.

I don't even want to think about Humanure in anything! Other than that, feedlots in Southwestern Kansas sell off their large amounts of cowshit to farmers for cheaper fertilizer spreading. I have worked as a pooper scooper and shit hauler over the course of a few years in my old trucking career. Around that part of the country, shit is called, "the smell of money."

Thank you again for the new lesson on where shit came from and the term for it! Enjoyed that!

Be a heck of a deal to cork up all them cornballs running around...

Eaters...

Some 70 or 80 percent of that feed tonnage going in... comes out the other end!

Don't want to think about it much, either...

Really don't want to step in it!

So many of them city bred, they'll be dipping water downstream from where they plopped it!

...and they'll eat anything!

No shi.... oops... dang it, I got that one wrong, didn't I?

Can I retake the test next week, teach?
