stedmo's paradox
is a variation on and perhaps: a quasi-answer to Zeno’s Paradox.
Zeno was a student of the great Parmenides
circa: 470 B.C.
Elea is a town southwestern Italy.
A school of thought originates from these particular thinkers
known as the Eleactic School of Philosophy.
This school is in distinct/direct conflict with the
Ionian or Milesian School of Philosophy.
Heraclitus is a founding figure of this school.
Same time frame.
The idea separating these two system of thought are between:
---being or becoming
static or flux ---
of reality
The Eleactic view saw the universe as a changeless unity
The senses lie to us when we perceive reality to change.
The essence of things are Static---ultimately non-moving
To Be!
The Ionian School argued that all is in flux. Everything is changing.
Can’t step into the same river twice
=====flux, change, becoming=========
that as simple an explanation I can give
to an age old philosophical conundrum
So Zeno argued that nothing moves!
He was quite ingenious in his demonstrations.
We’ve all heard of the fable of the rabbit and Achilles in a race.
If you give the rabbit a head start Achilles will never catch up to the hare.
In order for Achilles to reach the rabbit,
Achilles must first traverse ½ the rabbit’s distance.
In order to get to that half way mark
Achilles must go ½ of that distance.
On it goes to infinity.
Achilles never moves in theory.
So what is stedmo’s paradox & the quasi-answer to Zeno?
the answer is provided below if this board will move
or allow me to double post!

Cut yourself a strip of paper. The length is not important.
10” inches is my standard measurement.
Draw a straight line thru the middle like so
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now add arrows to the end thusly. Think Cupid :heart:
<-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->
Now add A--- B to either end, like so
B <----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >A
Now imagine your goal is to get from A to B.
You would have to travel ½ way that distance to get to B, first.
Right?
Like this
B<--------------------------------------------|------------------------------------------------>A
The graduated mark thingy shows quite plainly traveling towards B
and reaching the ½ mark..
But in order to travel to that half way mark
you’d have to traverse ½ that distance.
Right? The 2nd mark shows that distance.
B<--------------------------------------------|----------------------|---------------------->A
Now keep adding markers dividing by half
B<-------------------------------------------|-----------------------|---------|-----|---|--|-|>A
Obviously were not going to reach B!
Its infinity of micro-marks------|||||||||||-----
Moving is an illusion according to Zeno.
This really moved me!
So I looped the paper.
Made a circle!
A & B touched.
Boy get Girl !
using some poetic license!
Nothing moved linearly~ but the goal was accomplished!
I’m sure I didn’t originate this quasi-ideal/answer.
I stand on the shoulder of giants.
Ron being a prime example!
I don’t expect any responses to this thread.
Why?
well things don’t move!
we just get around
O
beach boys
O I digress!!!!

Stedmo, I used a conundrum with my kids, when they were very young. I told them, "It is a wise man that knows what he doesn't know." Their response at 6 is, "How can you know what you don't know?" A year or so later, they come to realize that they know that there are many things they don't know. They were ahead of the game! There are some adults that haven't yet learned that lesson. Many of them are called politicians.

Why Stedmo, you old Indian Philospher and Fakir you, welcome to the world on the Moebius strip, ad infinitum. You sir have once again uncivered for all to see the source of the Klingon ability to seemingly tanspond the space time continium, and you Dear Sir use that immense power and knowledge to "get the girl". Is that not Good Sir like using the Saturn 5 rackets, W/boosters and the return of the Space Shuttle to go to the corner storew for a pack of f*gs?(cigarettes gang, not a Tiny Tim adorned pack of cards)
It is the conundrum of universal legnth and measurement that dictates the legnth of a piece of string X the coeffecient af atmospheric friction to display hand speed reaching the zipper of a Damsels dress.Is the hand truly quicker than the eye or is the optic registry too slow to process what we really see.If A were to actually meet B then :
1. would they like each other
2 would they not merge and constitute another totally different letter
3.Could they overcome the laws of physics and therefore occupy the same space at the same time
4.Would the price of carrots on the Afghani open market measurably change as a result.
I must conclude then Stedmo that by misusing the immense power that Star Trek and Gene Rodenberry vested in you , you have created a whole new field of study....Stedmo's Ponderisims ( is that wood smoke I smell or am I thinking too much?)

not that this would be one of those threads
the history is factual
the paradox is true
the way I demonstate it
is sort of unique
& hard to convey in writing

Stedmo ... Great topic with my coffee!
So, we know what happens when an Ionian man meets an Eleactic woman due to Deep Daddy's zipper explanation. But what happens with an Ionian woman meets an Eleactic man, does that zipper still move? LOL Unless, he is a sailor. But then maybe I fall into Qirki's conundrum.
Thanks for a great laugh!
