I took my chihuahua to a dog park yesterday..he is almost 8 yrs old.. I was surprised that he did so well.. there were 2 boxers,,1 rott, and a scottish deerhound..for the biggest dogs there,, for my dog only standing 8 inches tall at the shoulder.. he did very well.. wasn't intimidated by the "BIG" dogs..and all the smaller dogs wanted him to play. I think he may of been a tide bit overwhelmed..cuz of all the smells..he isn't neutered..but for his 1st time there he did well.. Don't know that I would take him again..the smells on him after wards,,wasn't good...lol..

oh yes, we ahve a dog park here and we go often! I have 2 pugs, and they love to run off leash. I think it helps then socialize with other dogs and people too !!

Katie is an 80lb Rottie X and two of her fav buds when she was younger were pugs. They'd do this "battle" thing, roar and pretend to kill each other and then Katie would do a somersault and the pug would jump on her and grab her neck and "kill'ergood" and then Katie'd jump up and they'd start all over again. Lotsa roaring and snarling and people who didn't know any better figured , "Hmmm one dead pug" but it was all fun.

I believe leash free parks are THE best way to socialize your dog. The bigger, older ones teach the young'uns how hard they're allowed to play or bite before getting a good nip back and then they learn to play gently with small(er) dogs and they can get rough with bigger dogs. Also they're great places to teach a young dog to be slow and gentle with much older dogs who don't really want to play anymore - just there to say HI to all their old friends.

BTW the park I mentioned above with the woodstove ... that one has a SMALL DOG AREA but most of the time everybody goes into the general areas because the bigger dogs kow how to treat small dogs and there's rarely a problem. In fact some of the bigger dogs will protect the small ones if a large pup is being too rough.

I have been to the one in North Little Rock, and it was really nice, but 2 1/2 hours each way is a bit much for a trip to the dog park, lol.
