Corey, I feel your pain. I'm a single mom, but my son's dad is very active. I've been laid off for 9 months and have tried getting a job in all arenas and am told that I'm over qualified. This leaves me to be with my son more. He still goes to a sitter each week while I go job hunting. But once I have him the afternoon, it's rush home, cook, feed him and get him ready for bed at 8:30. Then maybe I can get some me time and pay bills, clean the house, wash clothes, cut the grass, repair whatever is broken in the house...you get it? Fortuntately, I have a support system. When his dad has him, I get out for a minute. I refuse to date anyone when my son is around. Call it old fashioned, but I don't want him seeing his mother with any man until I am sure that that man is gonna be around for a while. No need in me allowing him to bond with someone who is not good for us, right?
My advice to you: 1). Use family members or the childs god-parents to give you a free minute. 2). Join a few single mom support groups. Yeah, you might be the only guy, but think of all the women you'll meet. Even if the women don't turn out to be friends, or you never take one out, you can still share knowledge about raising your son, learn money saving tips, hear about free activities from these very same women. I asked a single dad friend of mine about the challenges of being a dad in charge. He told me about them and then told me how he had joined one of these groups and how well it turned out for him. Who knows, you might like it!
Best wishes!!
