Phoney pictures that look like they were scanned from a magazine.
No picture.
No details.
Cutesy synonyms for serious obesity in denial.

lol yes. Combined with a weak grasp of the english language, and she's travelling on business in Africa but needs to borrow $500 "my love", so she can get out of the hotel and fly to Canada to get my baby in her.

1. You established good rapport in emailing or chat, and they refuse to talk over the phone.
Why? Perhaps they are already in a relationship or marriage and or have something to hide, and or perhaps some hidden skeletons that would surface if you should talk to them. The excuse they use more often is, "I want to get to know you better".
Too me that's lame. Boyfriends/Girlfriends, ex boyfriends/ ex girlfriends have the potential and have done things such as harass, stalk, call constantly etc... I tell someone, use the same strategy you would use if the first date doesn't go well - don't answer ya phone or block em out if ya don't want to speak to the person.
2. Asking for nude pix right away 
3. Sending their first email consisting of one page Obvious scammers
4. Posting 5, 10+ year old pix without any current pix
5. They will email you when they are ready perhaps 2-5+ days when you know they have been online everyday because they receive 100s of notes from thirsty guys. Ya don't have a chance. Move on... This correlates to red flag #1.

No pic or one what is clearly a GQ or professional magazine type photo. Someone who says thay make A LOT of money and only have an associates degree or a high school education, nothing written in the personality description, the wrong location listed on their profile. Shall I go on? There's a ton of them.

When reading their profiles you will see inconsistencies...i.e. claim to be living in Texas, but have requested hearing from someone within 50 miles of Boston....usually means they cut and pasted but forgot to check the details. That includes discrepancies in height, hair color, education, and other things listed in their (stolen) profiles.
Some who are self-employed...in the "jewellery" business....imports and exports....There are so many....you will begin to see a pattern before long. I catch the ones who begin with "Cutie", "Sexy", "Hello Dear", mention "God-Fearing", having lost a spouse and having a young child to bring up, open to move to where you are to get to know you....after having asked for your full name and address, of course, and also wanting that because they want to send you a gift or flowers, loving you at first sight....I could go on and on.
I wanted to post a list of all those Red Flags, but I'm thinking that being able to see the list, they might just get smart and devise a whole new scheme that we would have to learn all over again.

What all of the others said above is good advice.....
I like what "knitten - lite - bestman and lobo" also said as well.
* They cant write well at all, written skills are totally lacking
* No pic or pics that look like they come from a mag advert
* they want to add you to IM straight away and you have never exchanged so much as one standard email with each other
* They do not want to speak over the phone prior to meeting
* Those who promise worldly riches, wealth to others'
* MULTIPLE PROFILES - this is a huge scammer at work here (there are quite a few profiles here who use multiple personalities)
* and wrong location
