Have you thought about getting a job in the health care field? It seems like there are never enough people to fill the positions, plus it's a definetely growing industry.

You are definitely not alone.
Job seekers have had three things against them of late.
1) Election year - most companies always hold their breathe a bit when it comes to hiring and what not watching and waiting to see what happens after major elections
2) Economic slow down, being constantly told we are in a recession gets people believing we are in a recession and so they act in financial matters as if there is a recession. It becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.
3) Budget constraints - most companies budgets are on a calendar year basis. Being the end of the year, they hold off on new hires etc till they have their full budgets to play with come January.
So, I am definitely one of those that is hoping to finally get a job come January.
Oh, btw, I do know that the Census 2010 is hiring..... www.census2010.gov

Have you tried the temp agencies in your area? During tough economic times, companies downsize and rely on temps to fill in the gaps when they need extra help.
There are also perm staffing agencies who will help you find more permanent work. These agencies will give you input on your resume (sometimes even revamp it for you) and give you ideas on how to put your best foot forward. They'll help you figure out the best way to answer the tough interview questions you'll face, based on your individual background. By the time you're sitting in front of the employer, you should be extremely prepared for the interview and feeling very confident. There should never be a fee to you for their services. The employer pays the fees.
I utilized these options after 9/11. At that time, I had a new degree & ended up in a market where I was competing directly with people in my field who had 20+ years of experience. I couldn't realistically compete. Temp an perm agencies helped me gain some incredible experience, and maintain my income level, while allowing the dust from the terrorist attacks to settle. A few years later, the market had stabilized & I was able to get back on track. The experience I'd been able to add to my resume in the interim actually helped me get closer to my goals than I thought it would.
Things always get iffy in an election year. They'll get better after Obama takes office, but probably not right away. Companies are also fairly tight-fisted at the end of the year. They'll loosen up when the new budgets come out in January or February. It can take a long time for things to straighten out. It's hard to wait when you're unemployed. Maybe an agency can help you find something to keep the coffers full until things settle down. Who knows...they may even help you find your dream job.

thanks crafty i did go to a staffing agency this week they told me to call back after the first unless they find something for me they will call. this place handles warehouses and plants and all which is what i'm looking for so maybe something will come of that. they said the big plants and all would be closing down for a couple of weeks. went to amtec they make wireing harnesses i went this week to but they layed off in nov. and the office lady didn't know about when they would rehire they would probably hire the lay offs back or most of them. i got the extended benefits that bush signed a while back did he do another one?
