Spend a big chunk of your income traveling to see someone who probably isn't going to take you seriously, and probably isn't worth the trip, and probably is going to play around on you and think it's ok because after all........You're so far away....

May I suggest the following:
A webcam...at least you can see each other until you can do one of the below.
A plane ticket....I am sure that one of these major airlines would love to fly you there.
A full tank of gas....road trips are fun!
I don't care how you get there, just get there when you can!  Switched the words to the song myself!

He/she isn't. If you haven't met them yet, don't even entertain the notion - They very likely aren't at all like you imagine.
LDRs are only recommended for situations where your long-time significant other has to move far away temporarily, for work or whatever. You can't avoid it if a situation like that comes up for the two of you. If it does, you can "see them" via webcams, and hopefully at holidays and such at least - And it will still be very hard.
At 18, just look for people nearer by, so that you can actually get together for dinner or a movie just because you felt like hanging out - Without needing a travel agent and a week off work.
