Maybe it's a regional thing and depends on where you grew up. It's common in parts of the South and the West where the summer weather is warm for some men to be shirtless at back yard parites, especially when people have a pool. I grew up in Texas, lived most of my life in Southern California, and retired in Florida, there's nothing unusual about men being shirtless in the summer in any of these places. Even most low rent apartments have swimming pools where people gather in these states. Men usually wears shorts with the shirt optional, and most women wear shorts with simple halter tops.
