OK, when I get upset, I take a step back and let things process before I turn to my friends to talk to, or for support. But what I don't get, is why some friends get upset when I do this. Shouldn't they know that I will turn to them once I get myself under control?
Anyone's opinion on this would be helpful!

Your friends understand, and will give you space until you're ready to talk.
My ex-wives never understood the concept either. They just thought I wasn't one to talk much about things. As long as you explain the need to gather your thoughts before you talk about them, then it should be understood by all concerned.
I would rather get my head straight first, than to say something off the cuff that might offend someone. I've done that, too, and it hurts like hell.

A friend gives ya the space n understands ya need it. 2 push ya is 2 be greedy 4 your attention @ a time of vulnerability. Friends don't interrogate, they wait beside ya till needed. Acquaintances are a whole different story.

every one has their own process of getting trough hard times.......sometimes i call a friend and go have a few drinks to let loose..some times i need a little ice cream and a cry fest...all by myself....

i believe a friend knows or should know the way you operate and how you handle things. They may want to help you before you are ready or before you ask them but a true friend will wait until you inquire. (does this sound like a fortune cookie er what) friends give friends time and patience along with room to navigate their own lives ya know
