What do you think about this?:

Some children of legal immigrants were interviewed on CNN this morning. This was a group of college students, whose immigrant parents have "made good" financially in America. My impression is that these first generation Americans are demanding their share of "milk & honey", as they made these statements:

1) They don't care who caused the economic crisis, they just want it "fixed".
2) They feel that "anyone should be able to come to America with only $59.00 and end up making six figures. That's the American Dream. We want the American Dream."
3) One young woman said: "My father immigrated from China. He's an engineer, and it's getting tough here. He's talking about returning to China, because he can make more money there".
4) "Yes, I'm mad, because I may not be able to do as well as my parents. I should be able to do better than my parents".

Note: Not one of these young men and women said one word about sacrifice or public service.

Sounds/Feels like too much of a sense of entitlement coming from those young people, if you ask me, coolchick.

No one is promised the good life here in America. No one gets "it" without hard work, sacrifice, delayed gratification, and patience.

These young people were given some flawed messages.

My own 18 year old watches her mother juggle multiple jobs and sweat the bills each month. We live a comfortble life in our modest home. We drive nice, economical and fairly late-model cars. We eat well and sleep in comfort. We occasionally indulge our love of clothes, shoes, and Chinese food. But we work like hell for all of it. She has 2 part-time jobs and contributes her fair share. She is learning and developing a solid work ethic that will serve her well.

Life isn't fair. There are no free rides/lunches. Everyone has to work. Hard. Everyone has to be responsible for him/herself. Everyone can make a contribution to the greater good. And everyone should play by the rules, follow the law and live with integrity.

Messages all Americans should hear. Messages I was taught. Messages I taught my daughter.

The young people you described will have a hard road to hoe if they don't "get" what the American dream is really about IMHO.

Peace, Pam

Good morning, Pam. I agree with you that it's good for young people to work - starting when they are teenagers. My kids worked from early on, and my daughter had part-time jobs the entire time she went to college. My son joined the Army for two reasons - one was patriotic & sense of duty, as he joined not long after "Nine-eleven" - and the other reason was to benefit from the discipline that the military teaches.
I'm the descendent of Irish and German immigrants. They came to America with nothing, but didn't expect everything to be handed to them. They taught their children that this is our country and our home, we immigrated here because we saw better opportunities here (not just the opportunity to make money), and we don't cut and run back across the ocean when times are tough. In hard times, we work alongside our fellow Americans to do what it takes to make things better. They participated in public service, and fought in our wars. They understood how important freedom is, and that all citizens must work together to preserve our freedom.
It saddens me to see that some immigrants now are not teaching their children a sense of dedication to the country they chose to adopt as their homeland. It also saddens me that they would choose a country based solely on how much personal wealth they can amass, and to take advantage of our freedoms without teaching that you should "pay it forward". To me, they are teaching their children to be greedy and self-serving. I just hope that the group of young people I saw on CNN are in the minority. I do hope that the majority of first-generation Americans have more sense than that.
