Not to long ago I came across "Tore Down" by Freddie King; prior to King's version, I had only heard the Clapton version and thought it was definitive. Enjoy!

A few years back, I was walking down the street in New York City and I passed a little blues bar. I heard this incredible blues booming out of the door every time it opened. I looked at the hand written sign on a chalk board out front and it said, "Susan Tedeschi, 9:00 pm." It was 8:55. I had never heard of Susan Tedeschi, but the blues I heard was compelling, so I made my way inside. The music was from a video of previous performer at the venue, not Susan. Intrigued nonetheless, I got a seat at the bar.
A few minutes later, settled in with a drink, this beautiful young woman with a guitar full of stickers takes the tiny stage. She looked a little nervous and had a very high, girlish voice, but she had a compelling presence. A little sound check and then the Blues changed for me forever.
Susan Tedeschi sang the blues to steal my breath away and have my heart beat to every note.
Turn this one up...ladies and gentleman...Susan Tedeschi

Dave Hole. I have never seen him live, part of the reason, I'm sure, is that he hails from Australia and that is his home base. The fact that he learned to play on the other side of the equator is not the reason he plays the guitar the way he does.
The story goes he broke a finger playing ball, and couldn't play in the conventional way without pain. Hole plays in his unique way because he is differently abled. What a joy!
He has got some kind of relationship with that guitar and the two of them make beautiful gut-wrenching blues.
Now, I am still not quite sure what he is doing, but man is it good.

Martin Sexton is not what you would call a Bluesman per se. He has a wonderful mixture of styles and influences. He uses his voice like another one of his instruments when he performs-he's been known not just to play the guitar, but the piano and drums too. The blues for Sexton are tinged with happiness-maybe even joy-in an unusual way, be it by the lyrics, the music, or the message. The distinctive character of his blues catharsis evokes and releases equally distinct emotions. Sometimes there are morphed medleys and sideways segue-ways, other times Blues Ballads. Always some part of an unfinished story. Try some.

and one more...

What happens when a Jimmy Cliff reggae song about struggling with alienation falls into the hands-and heart-of an eccentric, classically trained, very socially conscious pop star? A little soulful blues from Annie Lennox.

The great thing about the blues is that it is universal.
Everyone seems to feel it and feel for it, but in different ways.
Candye Kane sings the blues in a very conventional way...maybe.
She has an awful lot of fun with some really sensitive issues for a lot of people.
By singing-no proclaiming-about things a bit "taboo" they go from secretive scourges to celebrations.
Candye's back-story (no pun intended: http://www.candyekane.com/bio.html
Two from Ms. Kane, first, "Great Big Woman"

Now, ain't that the truth. One more..."Bad Girl"

Blues harmonica. The harmonica is a fascinating instrument which I know hardly a thing about (and I even own one). Blues harp has seemingly a wide variety of sounds and is usually used as a "spice" in music.
Not for Kim Wilson. Blues harp is the meat and potatoes of the music for Wilson. I first saw Kim Wilson as part of a Blue's Blow-out. I think the line-up was Wilson, Magic D*ck, Mark Hummel and Charlie Musselwhite. Formidable players all, with Musslewhite and his briefcase full of harmonicas, a legend.
During the show Kim started one of his, I was to soon discover, show-stopping solos.
With just a spotlight on him in a darkened club, he began a descent from the stage into the audience. The spot followed him as he started and stopped, meandering his way through the club. All the while not playing, but preaching, with that harp. It started to talk. I mean, you could hear in the notes and intonation, the bending and breathing of the sounds, that harp talking to you. And when Wilson punctuated that sermon with a point of his finger or a wave of his hand, people were nodding and saying "yes!" There might have even been an "Amen!"; a thrilling performance by a virtuoso.

Kim Wilson and Kid Ramos working-out on a little blues shuffle.

Hi
Seeing all the Winter Bros. stuff reminded me of this tune.
The video is kind of flat, but listen to the guitar work.
And the lyrics..."blues is hard to define"...I guess.
(Enjoy musclecarmania!)
