Just read this morning that by leaving your pc on costs $2.8 billion each year in energy.
I am guilty of leaving it on overnight, but think I shall start shutting it down now.

The highest it was all last year was $53. I didn't have to run either the heater or a/c last month. I'd say the average bill is $31

I always do, as when you shut it down, you invite viruses to embed themselves in
your hard drive. Be sure to always do security scan before you shut down your
computer...always!

In the "old days" of computers it was hard on the internal components and they drew a lot of power to operate.
Nowadays even though a hot-rod desktop computer will draw as much as 750 watts when running at a peak draw on the processor and internal components, they still draw nearly nothing when not in use. Most PC's manufactured now are "green compliant" systems that can be set to hibernate when not in use.
The 2 most damaging things that happens to computers is starting up and operating at high temperatures. Heat is a death sentence for a computer, so operating one during the summer when temperatures are high can seriously damage your computer.
The conventional wisdom is that the general life span of a hard drive is approximately 5 years, but with constantly falling prices in hard drives, it is more sensible to replace your hard drives every 3 years.
Intel Active Monitor is an alerting utility created by Intel and available exclusively on Intel Desktop Boards. As PCs increase in performance and decrease in size, monitoring the cooling and overall system health becomes more important. The Active Monitor works with specialized sensors on your Intel Desktop Board to constantly monitor the system's temperatures, power supply voltages, and fan speeds. If temperatures become extremely hot or a system fan or power supply fails, the user is immediately notified.
I don't use it on my laptop since I seldom leave it run for longer intervals, but I do use it on all my desktop PC's and more than once it has saved having data loss or having to replace a computer or components. It is a free download from Intel and I really suggest that anybody living in warmer climates download and install it.
