So here's my dilemma... I've gone on a few dates where the other person drinks like a proverbial fish. I am typically very cautious on the first date, so maybe I'll have a glass of wine, but not much more. (I'm a true "lightweight!") So I went on this date, it was okay, but no real "sparks" or chemistry for that matter. We said our good-byes, and when I paid the bar tab, it was $55.00! I'm not cheap, but that was a lot for two glasses of wine. It seems that she had arrived an hour or two earlier, and was doing shots before I got there. Can you believe it? Now I tend to meet at a Starbuck's for coffee... it's safer, anyway. Am I coming off as cheap? (I'm an English teacher by profession... and you know how poorly we get paid....) Any ideas?

Your're not coming off as cheap, at least not to me. I think it was wrong of the woman to put drinks on your tab that she had before you even arrived.

She did you a favor really. You were able to learn she is a drunk on the very first date. Better than finding out 2 months from now right?

Coffee is the best way to meet someone but shouldn't mean that you flip the bill. After all you are just meeting to see if both of you should go further. If you both click then wine is a nice way to start a real date. Sounds romantic.

I can't believe some people. Where does someone get the nerve to put drinks on someone else's bill when they haven't agreed to pay it? What is more, where does someone get off on having someone pay for something that they weren't even there to buy???
What about a picnic, or a lunch date on the weekend? Could go to the zoo or a museum or something else where you can walk and talk. If you aren't clicking, then at least you have other things to talk/focus on. JMO

Did you offer to pay her tab? If so, then you shouldn't complain about it? I'd have just paid for the drinks I bought her. Someone doing shots before a date sends a big red flag up in the air for me? But, I've had my share of drunk dates, so, I know what you are talking about.
