I am trying to get together and plan a potluck picnic at a park for either a Saturday or a Sunday.....early afternoon timeframe. We will have games and good food. Is this something that everyone would like to do or should we postpone it until August?

I would like to find a centrally located park that has good amenities (Covered picnic area with lots of tables, restrooms, and a lot of grass for playing games) so that a lot of people would be able to join in on the fun. Do you have an idea of a park location? I am thinking somewhere in between the Federal Way to Seatac area. This way it is about a halfway mark between Olympia and Everett. We need a place where we can park a lot of vehicles....easy to get to as well.

The dates that I was thinking of doing this event is either June 13/14th or June 20/21st. Either of those weekends work with me if you do not mind children joining in on the fun. Otherwise....the 13th or 14th is when I will be kid free for the weekend. We can do a 1pm timeframe. Eat and play for the afternoon. Hows about it......who is all game?

If we cannot find a place that is free......how would you all be amenable to pitching in to rent a picnic area?

Game ideas?

If you are planning on joining us....what will you be contributing to the potluck?

Do I post an actual "Event" thread once we have things planned as well?

I think either weekend would work, but Father's Day is the 21st, so the 13th/14th might be better.

How about Lake Fenwick Park? I haven't been there myself, but I know a couple other people have told me it's nice. And large enough.

And, yes, I would create an event for this. It's at a public place with enough space, so I think it would be a good idea.

I, of course, would contribute a trifle.

I myself cannot make either..Too many graduation parties set up for June..And in my opinion I say dont set it to an event..I think you would just be asking for trouble with attracting homeless and others such as that but hey that is just my opinion...My Florida friends tried it and it worked out horribly and was a bit of a dangerous thing they found out posting an event...350 were going to show...Invites go out to everyone in Oregon WA and Idaho...Please no one get the idea to do that for the camping trip as we cant handle that kind of crowd...
Best of luck with your picnic though...Sounds great to get the groups together...

The weather in August is always good but June can be rather unpredictable. There is a public park at Lake Tapps you might want to check into. A park in Federal Way is Steel Lake and it is very nice also.

The reason for the potluck picnic is so far away from us is because it will give everyone in Washington on DH a chance to get together and not just a small group of people. I will see who all is wanting to participate and then choose a location that is central to all who will be in attendance.

Sandra....if you could get a ride into Lacey.....I am sure that we can find a carpool for you to join. Would love to have you join us at any gathering we do.

Jean....what weekend works best for you? I am leaning towards the 13th of June or postponing until August timeframe.

We could do one in August, but it would be nice to do one in June. We could do one each month for that matter. Either way, not everyone will be able to make it.

Using the event function would spread the word to people who don't normally go into the forums, and thus draw more people. After all, that is the point of these meet and greets. I don't think we need to worry about homeless people showing up, as I doubt there are any on here. It seems to have worked well for the Sno-King group. I don't think one bad instance warrants never using it. A public park can handle more people than a bar or restaurant can. I leave that decision to you two, Sandy and Keith (if you two are indeed the ones organizing it.) If you do need help organizing it, let me know. I will make myself available.

I wasn't trying to be rude, but I was responding to feeling "put out there" myself regarding the event feature and the camping trip. And not for the first time.

Your post sounded to me like you were fretting about something that didn't need to be fretted about, whether it was meant that way or not.

I have merely asked a host and organizers about the event feature. I have never even suggested I might try to create an event myself for something I'm not in charge of.

If you're offended so be it.

Amy, you seem so insitent on some of the threads to turn it into an "EVENT". If you are so insitent with that...why don't you simply start one of your own and do the "EVENT" I think it has been made pretty clear on several threads that "EVENT" is not a good deal.

You suggested it on the potluck at my place, you have suggested it for the potluck that 'SASSY" is working on, you have suggested it for the Lake Camping thing, yet no one wants that.

All of this crap, sure ain't fun anymore.

Well if you post and event i think would be a great idea.. i have done posting and they have worked out great.. you want alot of people to show up.. you only get 50% or so normally anyhow.. its been about 75% for us who who .. if you want it to grow and meet people you have to advertise it some how

If you are so scared of meeting the wrong people then you shouldnt be on the site.. Either in a park at a bar , Casino ... if there is a freak you are going to meet them.. come on people.. Step out of the box.. you did when you joined a free dating site..

Love yall

OK....I guess this has been coming.......
I started on this dating site looking for my life mate. Since then, I have made some great friends along the way by getting out and joining these people at the gatherings. When I decided to go to the first gathering....I had already resigned myself to being single and living alone for the rest of my life. So I went looking to make new friends. Little did I know that they guy that sat to my left at that table was soon to be my man. I am soooooooooooooo glad that I got out from behind the computer and decided to join in on the fun.

Now that I have my mate....why do I need to continue to be on a dating site? I ask this of myself many times. My answer each time.....to continue the bond of friendship with the people that I have met along the way and to make more friends and help them meet their potential mate as well. That is the reason of these gatherings.

I thought that a potluck picnic would be a great idea to be able to spend time with friends and a chance to meet new friends who might find their potential mate or make friends of their own. Stress free zone and lots of fun. I like event planning and thought that this would be a great way to get that hobby of mine working. I did not want to cause a rift amongst anyone at all.

Amy's suggestions of creating an "Event" sounds like a great idea. But I will not create one until a place can be found that will accommodate a good amount of people. I also want to find a space that is centrally located to who all would like to come to this event. Once I have all of that information....then I will create an "Event". (This is the reason for posting a "Thread vs Event" first...so that I can work out all the kinks.) If you choose not to come to the event, hopefully you will be able to join us at the next one.

So................with all of that said.....I thank everyone for their input. It is greatly welcomed. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. And this event is not just "mine"....it is "everyone's". All is welcome to come and have some good clean fun.

Suggestions are welcome............................

1. Date: June 13, 2009 Say about 1pm Potluck Picnic
2. Place: To be determined (Do you have a recommended place?
3. Food: Who will bring what to the picnic?
4. Bring Your Own (BYO): Chairs, tables, blankets, drinks
5. Contribution: A couple BBQ's(charcoal, propane for the BBQ's)
plates, silverware, napkins, cups
sporting equipment (Baseball gear, volleyball gear, etc.)

I wish each and everyone of you a great day and hope that you can see that this event is for fun and for a chance for everyone to get out from behind their computers and meet new friends.

S.

Okay, I'm going to reply on this subject and be done with it. I tried to be done with it already.

I have not insisted on turning threads into events. I have asked hosts/organizers if this might be a good opportunity to do so. When I asked about camping (which I think I did long ago before hearing the story of Florida), the reply was no because there would potentially not be enough room, given what happened in Florida. That was fine.

Given the Sno-King's group success with the event feature, I asked if Gary wanted to try it, given that I kept seeing people post and commenting that they'd like to see more people come to these things. I checked to see if there was enough space and if Gary was comfortable with it, after all it would be free advertising for his business. He said no and that was the end of it.

Sandy mentioned in her original post the idea of creating an event for the picnic, so that definitely was not me insisting on it. I only posted that I thought it would be a good idea, especially since it was in a public place and potentially with plenty of room.

The only problem I had was one person in each case coming back with the Florida case (one case) and then making comments about being sure not to create an event for the camping. I've never done that and had only asked about once. I've not created my own event because we already have events happening. I would have helped organize the picnic, but people are already on that, and they are very good organizers, so I don't need to -- although I've offered to help.

And yes, Sassy, if you decide to create it as an event, you would post it as an event. Once three people respond, then it gets mass emailed, although that part of it doesn't seem to be working right now.

Have a nice day, everyone....

Sassy, I will look into various public parks and their availability for the weekend of the 13th of June vs. August and let you know what I come up with.

I know of a place in Maple Valley. It is along the Maple Valley highway between Renton and Maple Valley. It is not free though. It is along the river with seclusion. It even has a small "church" area. The Renton Old Iimers get together happens there often.

I would enjoy meeting some of my hopefully new friends. Enumclaw has a nice park close to downtown Enumclaw that is free for use...may have to reserver a covered spot though. Lake Meridian in Kent is also an awesome place for get togethers. If my yard had room, I would invite you all to the work party I have planned for June 7...I am providing beer/sodas/burgers and tools and weeds/trees to be moved...also some rocks/bricks and some out buildings to be removed.

I think the pot luck picnic would be great... i thing we should run with it..

a note.. People get hurt at bars or schools and all kinds of places that we hear on the news all the time.. you could go buy gas and get shot, there is something crazy that can happen anywhere .. if it posted on the mass email or forum what is the difference its still the same people on the site.. .If that was that case Busybee shouldnt have opened her home up for some crazy to come to.. We have to start some where. Like i said we all joined the site.. These gatherings there are always a core of people that know each other and watch out for each other ..

I look forward to meeting more people and making friend and maybe find my mate either here or in reg life..

BTW for some reason today's event was not mailed. And i have been ignored by the customersupport . So its either people know people on here and said something about our group or the system isnt working. The site owner hasnt read my mail either.. So if this keeps up not sure what ill do

I think it's really great how often groups in WA get together. One of these days I might actually find the time to attend one of the outings. Since I haven't attended, it's really not my place to interject an opinion, but I feel like I should. In theory, a potluck sounds like a wonderful idea. I'm sure it would be a lot of fun for an established group where there's a certain level of trust. My concern with this idea is that you're planning on eating food supplied by some people who are strangers. Granted, I'm the type of person who tactfully avoids dishes supplied by certain co-workers when we have potlucks at work, so maybe I'm a bit too cautious. This idea just worries me. Food poisoning is always a concern at picnics, but there are some crazy folks out there. I just don't want to see anyone end up getting drugged or poisoned. I know that sounds totally paranoid, and that's really not how I want to come across. I just don't want to see anyone get hurt. Maybe you could do a 'bring your own picnic' if you go for a larger group, or keeping the group limited to those you've built up some trust with.

I am not totally sure of how many potlucks we have had to date, but I can attest, no one has been poisened, threatened, dismembered or any thing else.

It certainly is your choice to feel the way you do, but I do not think many share your concerns... And quiet honestly take a little except to your way of thinking.

OK....I am searching for various parks to have this potluck picnic at and I am at a loss. I do not know the area well.....so I am looking for recommendations. I want an area that is between Olympia and Everett and close to I-5 corridor for ease of travel to everyone that will be attending.

Things I am looking at:

1. Covered or uncovered picnic area that will hold several people
2. Lots of parking
3. Lake or Sound is appreciated but not expected...
4. Amenities.....I like options.....

This first picnic would be scheduled for the afternoon of June 14th (Sunday). I say this because on the 13th my sister is running in her first marathon and I am thinking I want to be there to cheer her on.

I look forward to your input.

**Keith...I have not forgotten you....I have just been busy and had a lot of things thrown at me of late that needed taking care of. I still look forward to talking with you about this event.

Coulon Park in Renton. About 45 minutes to an hour in either direction.
Has a covered areas you can reserve (residents of Renton only-I have friends in Renton who can reserve one). Another covered area open to the public. Lots of large grassy areas, a beach, nice walking trail (a mile round trip), convenient parking in 3 lots (excess parking across the street), boat ramp, two restaurants (Kid Valley, Ivar's..no worry about food poisoning). Right on the south end of Lake WA.

I'll help you organize it along with my Renton/Kent/Auburn group.

Coulon Park in Renton is a great site but with one exception....you have to pay to reserve the area. It has all the amenities that I am looking for.....but I do not have that type of money to reserve a spot.

Any other ideas?

Yeah, just checked. It's $80 for residents. Don't you think everyone would chip in to pay for it? If not, there are lots of open areas we can use.

Due to some last minute changes in family plans....I am canceling the proposed June potluck picnic. If anyone else would like to take over and plan it for another group....I say go for it. I will be unable to make it to any kind of potluck in June. There is the upcoming Riffe Lake Camping trip scheduled for July. I do look forward to attending that with everyone. If you would like to attend that event please let Lifetimeskier or Dunitall know and they can tell you the details. Hope you all can join in on the fun.

**Keith and Aero.....Sorry to do this....but due to some last minute family plans....I have to cancel. I hope that you two have successful events for your area of the woods and one day I hope that all the WA groups can get together.

My main purpose for this and any event that I help plan is for everyone to get out from behind their computers and meet new people that will become great friends and hopefully meet their potential life mate. That is, of course...the main reason for what this site is supposed to be used for. Again, sorry if I caused any inconvenience to you all.

Anyone interested in having the picnic, please let me know. I'll get the ball rolling. Sorry you won't be able to make it.

Yes folks, contact the wicked witch of Kent, if you would like join her at the picnic...I am sure with how she treats people here and in the 50 and 60's threads, how could anyone not want to go.. I hear she is going to offer free rides on her broomstick to anyone who shows up...
