And one of my favorite songs is "Fireflies" by Faith Hill, which has less too do about lightening bugs, but is a very suiting song for me. And my daughter and I sing it however, while laying on the trampoline at night watching the stars and fireflies!

In the last three years I think I've seen, ONE. They used to be everywhere.
Oh yeah, They're Scissor Tail Flycatchers.

I have a big yard out back, and then it goes into the woods. If you sit out there on my swing, every night, I'll just sit and watch the deer and what ever come out of the woods into my yard. With the field that runs up along the woods we have lightning bugs every where. Kids are out there catching them all the time. I can't run to good, but watching them is a blast. I'll help find the jars for them and then there on their own.

Maybe I could go chase them down in the panhandle of Florida. Now, there's a flimsy excuse for a road trip if I ever needed one!

Every year for our town's festival we have fireworks, and we always sit by a field so we can catch some fireflies while we wait. The best time I ever had with a guy was doing that, and if I could find a guy who would do it again, I'd totally go for it!! Such a wholesome and sweet date.

I saw them on the east coast when I was a kid, and that was the only thing I envied them for LOL When this Seattle born and raised kid asked if we could go to the beach, and they said they didn't have one, it was almost impossible to get my 8 year old brain around that one LOL I thought EVERYBODY had a beach LOL
But I would most definitely join in the hunt, as long as no one was squishing them to squeeze off the glowing part to rub it on people for "bracelettes". My uncle did that and I about tossed my cookies. Poor little bugs! I let mine go.

Ohh loved the lightening bugs....would get so excited waiting... so we could catch them in the Minnesota darkness with the stars out on my Grandpas farm and see how many who would catch the most and get their jar lit up the brightness.....and then when it stormed and thundered we'd sit on the porch while Grandpa would tell us that God was cleaning his house and moving his furniture around....What great memories of Minnesota...........Sea

Too early for lightning bugs here in NJ, we get them more towards the middle of the summer.
Camping this weekend, my handsome man and I were pointing out dragon flys, all sorts of bugs and whatever to each other (and, yes, there was an occasional, JIIIIMMM, SPIDER!!!). So I am guessing that if one of us started catching lightning bugs, the other would join in.
Hey, Torisdad, we had chicken on the BBQ for our first camping dinner!!

I loved chasing lightning bugs- we also called them fireflies- when I was a kid.
We don't get many in the city, but where my mom is in Jersey there are loads... and the sky is lit with stars beyond imagination. It's amazing to see...
and yes, we still chase the fireflies and put them in jars. I think it's a rite of passage- and a sure sign of summer and all things good and simple.

I was just talking to my son about chasing Lightening Bugs the other night . I told him how much fun it was , while growing up. I always hated it when the boys would pull their lights off Where are they now ?? They no longer exist because of global warming , how sad. We always had such imaginations growing up , entertained ourselves for hours over simple things. I kinda feel sorry for the kids now , they will never experience the fun , of such simple things in life.

I keep two or three rinsed out glass jars in the pantry just for the kids catching fireflies or other types of bugs out here.
We have thousands and thousands of fireflies around here in the summer. Always have had. Not sure why they would be gone in other parts of the country.
Maybe a good low cost date would be a nice cookout here at the lake and then running out back late evening and catching fireflies. Good idea. I know what I am going to do on one date this summer...LOL
