Hi, CathyMCC, I lost my husband on Dec 22, 2001 with a memorial service on Christmas Eve. I will tell you honestly that the first 2 1/2 years were extremely difficult. I went to work each day, brought home tons of work to do at night, ate supper, began working again, and went to bed and to get a few hours of sleep, got up and went back to work the next day. That was my routine.
But I will tell you this, each day, with God's help, it's gotten better. Holidays are difficult, but I have to remember the wonderful times we had, even though we were only married 2 years, and he would want me to be strong for the grandchildren. I know that he's with me each day helping me get through, and it gives me comfort.
Rely on your friends and members from your church. They will help you get through it.
Good Luck to you. My thoughts will be with you.

Cathymcc its hard for all of us during the holidays but you can do it in your way and at your pace, don't let anyone tell you any different. Start something new that is yours to do every year, visit with freinds, and if you belong to a church ask your Pastor what you might be able to do to help others or the children who have little or nothing. The first year I walked in a fog, don't remember cooking, wrapping gifts, or much that year but I made it through. This is my third Christmas without Michael and I don't like it but I make it the best I can for Andrea, its what Michael would have done for her had it been me gone. We have new things we do now and we always remember him. Reach to all of us here if you need to just talk.

Holidays are always hard Cathy but you get through it.. I lost my husband in Mar 07 and then my mom in Oct 07.. But that Christmas I got a miracle... All 4 of my children were home with me and all talking to each other! The oldest and youngest had not spoken to each other since their dad passed away in 1999..( we had been divorced over 20 yrs) It broke my heart that they were going thru that as they had always been close.. That was the best present I could have gotten... you never forgetyour loved ones but as time passes you tend to remember the good times more than the bad ones.. I will be thinking of all of you during the holidays.. We all need all the support we can get..

I'm at 11 1/2 years and holidays are good for me again. It just takes time to heal.My favorite part of Christmas is my husband's (dad's) tree. I started it the first Christmas after he passed. I add a new dated angel to it every year. It's the first thing I put out every year.It just makes me feel good inside and makes him a part of our family holiday.
As for our other tree it's hung with memories from all those Christmases past we shared together

I started doing holidays again this year because my friends told me they were tired of coming to my home and it being "same old, same old" said it had always been warm and smelled of Christmas. Guess you can get so absobed in your own grief, you fail to try and make memories, good ones, for others.

My first Christmas without my husband, too. Especially hard since our daughter and I are in a new city, away from family, and it was our favorite holiday. My husband adored Christmas.
And our anniversary is three days later. It would have been 7 years.

This will be my third Christmas without my husband, he passed away Dec.22,2007. I just can't do Christmas, my heart is just not in it anymore. I gave my christmas tree away today along with some decorations and three train sets. My husband always set the tree up and we decorated it together. The tree was too large for me to handle alone anyway so someone else can enjoy it. Maybe next year I will be more in a holiday mood and buy a smaller tree or just a table topper. My daughter did my xmas shopping last year and she will again this year. It just makes me so sad to go into stores and see all the decorations etc. I hope in time I will feel different about the holidays but for now I just want to get through the month of December.
I know I am not alone as this is a sad time of year for so many of folks that have lost a loved one, makes no difference what time of year, you still feel still feel the pain of not having your loved one with you. I will pray for peace and happier times for all of you.

Well I know for me the only reason a tree got put up was due to my daughter. I know this is going to be really hard without him by my side. Just thankful for the kids. God Bless everyone and please remember the reason for the season...

Reading all these posts today has been really hard for me because I feel so much of what you all are or have been feeling. This will be my second Christmas without my beautiful and wonderful angel Pam. She died on December 6, 2008 but I think I was in so much shock last Christmas I was totally numb and I was able to fly back to Michigan to be with my kids and that helped a little. This year I don't have that luxury and have had a year to think about her and how much I still love and miss her. I'm not even putting up any decorations which was her favorite thing in the world to do. She loved Christmas so much and tried to make everybody happy.

Good Morning, Everyone,
I made it through Christmas! Two of my daughters, their spouses, and my three grandchildren were all together on Christmas Eve to celebrate so that the grandchildren could be at their respective homes for Santa Claus. We had a lot of fun, and it was so good for all of us to be together. On Christmas morning I went up to street to my daughter's house to see what my two older grandchildren had received from Santa. In the afternoon a friend of mine went to the movies and to an early dinner. A very enjoyable Christmas time.
How about the rest of you who have lost spouses? How did you all do? My thoughts have been with all of you.

I went with a freind and his wife to dinner at one of the casinos here in town...tasted like cardboard... then promptly lost $20.00 on the slots and went home. Just sat here in my office and did some work that was sitting here. Chritsmas was just like any other day except I lost $20.00. Oh well.
