Did you know that by giving out your land line phone number that someone can type it into the Google search bar what they get? Try it with your phone number and see.
Most of the time by typeing in your phone number 555 555-5555 that they will get your address with a option of mapping from where they are at to your address.
Very Scary for Gal's and kids.
Let all that you know about this. One good thing is that cell phone numbers are not included in this. I could not belive this was so easy to do.

Yes, they can do a number search on two sites I know of. Do a *67 before calling a person so that your number is blocked from the receiver. That will eliminate a lot of headaches.

This is a great thread! Kudos for putting it out there. One thing I would add is that Verizon does have a reverse lookup for their cell customers. Other cell companies may also. So, please don't give out your cell number unless you're sure you can't be searched that way. You can enter "reverse lookup" (with the "'s) in your search engine to search for sites offering this service.
Also...
...if you live in a small town near a larger city, you may want to list yourself on dating sites as living in the City.
...pay attention to the people around you when you run errands, go shopping, or are out in public. If you see someone looking at you like they recognize you, looking at you funny, or someone that you think you recognize from a dating site, be especially aware when you leave that you're not being followed. It can even be best not to go straight home. (More than once I've seen people in public that I recognized from dating sites & it was obvious they recognized me. Luckily, we each went our own way without incident.)
...don't give out any descriptive information about your job. I made the mistake of telling someone what type of project I was managing and he actually showed up at my work (uninvited and unexpected). It was a little scary.
...don't give out your dog's name. Some dogs assume that if someone knows their name they're ok and will allow that person in (possibly when you're not home). The dog could also accept food from someone who knows their name when they wouldn't from a stranger. This could give someone an opportunity to poison your dog and make you more vulnerable. Unless you have a dog like mine who will only allow a few select people to touch him, is always with me, and will not accept food from anyone who isn't one of his special people or wearing a safety vest (long story), it's best to keep your protector's name private.
I don't want to scare anyone, or cause anyone to be unnecessarily paranoid, but we are talking about personal safety here.
While we're at it, there seems to be a misconception that by telling someone where you're going to be, having them call or calling them to check in, and giving them a picture and contact information for the person you're meeting will keep you safe. IT DOESN'T!! All this does is make sure if you don't check in or answer your phone there will be someone to tell the police that you might be in trouble. If the picture on the site was bogus and the cell was a disposable, the information your friend/family member gives the police probably won't be much help in finding you. Keep in mind that by the time the person you've trusted with this information decides to go to the police it may already be too late. You could already be in serious danger or dead. A better idea would be to have your friend or relative go and sit at a nearby table if you meet at a coffee shop or restaurant. Otherwise, the friend/relative can just stalk you while you're on your date. The best you can hope for in this scenario is that if you disappear your forethought will help the police find you while you're still alive.
