The "respect" of foreign women you refer to...also used to be common in the US, but as women's rights improved...things changed. However, how do you define respect?! The problem is "is respect simply "bowing down and catering to the desires of men," which is probably why so many of your friends in the navy married Japanese women?! They were looking for someone to dominate and control; someone without a voice. That is NOT respect. It is subordination. In that type of marriage the husband's word is the law. It's little wonder why conservatives, military, and police families have the highest rate of divorce in the U.S. These guys are looking to place a bridle on their brides. And some are not going to just bite the bit. 8>)
