Who's your favorite author, and why?
Mine would be Robert Heinlein though there are a lot of close seconds.
Heinlein's novels though almost all of the Science Fiction genera are all well written and he covers a wide range of subjects over the course of his career. "Good Science Fiction is good fiction" he was known to say though he may have been quoting someone else. (Asimov?)
He was a master story teller, he could describe a hearty breakfast in such detail you could smell the coffee and make you rethink your world view with a paragraph.
He was ahead of his time in a lot of ways, not as in spaceships and the other plot devices but the subjects he covered.
"Stranger in a Strange Land" spoke of sexual equality and liberation when it was published in 1959, even treating homosexuality as "normal". The publisher had him edit out some of the more "racy" parts then and the unabridged version wasn't published until the late 80s though my then it was considered pretty tame. The social commentary of the novel and the ideas within it probably shaped my world view in a lot of ways. I was 12 the first time I read it.
"The Moon is a Harsh Mistress", "The Number of the Beast", "Time Enough for Love" and the short story anthologies are at the top of my "must read" list. His later novels with the exception of "Friday" all tie in together but one can read any one of them and they stand on their own.
Mr. Heinlein is no longer with us. Jack Chalker and his Wellworld novels would be my favorite living author who is still publishing new material. But that's another thread

At the moment? Andrew Greeley. He wrote a book nearly 18 years ago caled The God Game. About a software developer/author whose computer is hit by lightening one evening and the "game" software that he was previously testing - becomes real and he controls their thoughts, their impulses, their lives and their weather....then the characters bein showing up in his home...
It reminds me of DH and Dustin...I wonder if he has read it?
It's a good book!
(Nice thread, Clint!)

Dr. Seuss
His books are so deep and intriguing. The suspense that builds until the climax is so surreal.
But seriously, I do not read much fiction. I am the type that prefers non-fiction.

It is a toss up between Barry Sadler (The Casca series is absolutely uncanny) and Sun T'su (Art of War)...practically brilliant/brilliantly practical.

I don't like to read. But I do like to write short stories. In doing so I have encountered a DH member whom I enjoy reading his short stories. It's "akashaman" here's the link to his stories if you'd like to give his stories a read. Just copy and paste it, you know the drill:
