ladies, here`s a question for you: if we were out on a date, and you were one of those "smokes occasionally" kind of people, would it bother you if i asked you not to smoke around me? i`m an ex-smoker, so it`s something i`de rather avoid, but i don`t want to be rude or sound like a health nazi. thanks for your input.

I smoke but would have no problem with your request not to while we were on a date. How long is a date, 2-3 hours? I could go without for that long. I've never had a problem respecting the wishes of a non-smoker.

Oh my dear, you certainly are not being rude or sounding like a health nazi. And guess what -- you wouldn't even have to ask! Your turf and neutral turf...smoke free. Here's the catcher: my turf is ingrained- my house, my car, etc. As an ex-smoker I imagine you understand what I mean. There's an event limit for my in-grained areas, such as - a party at my house gets smoke free in-doors, just chillin' around the abode doesn't. I would think with these circumstances good respectful friendships can be formed and last indefinitely. As long as the other person doesn't try to tell me what I can do on my turf (which some have).
Hope this helps & gives you another data point.

I have found for one date smoking is not an issue. However, over time, and of course this is only my experience, those occasional smokers, trying to quit smokers, etc. find they have to step out for a smoke, and eventually get offended that someone would expect them to abstain at all.....just my experience, but that is why I heavily discount as dating material anyone who says they only smoke a little bit, once in a while etc. Wont exclude anyone, but I havent had great success in such circumstances.
As to the person asking about why not date only those who dont smoke..... surprise.... there are a number of people who say they dont smoke, and yes, they do.... since they arent chain smokers they call themselves non-smokers. And there is that opportunity to date someone who may actually want to quit smoking and is just looking for the right incentive, i.e., nice guy they can focus on to give them that incentive.
Never know what will happen in the dating world.

He probably doesn't want to limit his choices to non-smokers only. If it's not a make or break for someone, they shouldn't exclude potential love.
And if you have to ask someone to not smoke around you, they're not being considerate. Last time I dated a non-smoker, she rarely ever saw me smoke. If ever. Smokers are surprisingly accomodating if you make it known you don't smoke

Well they are if you try to push them around or impress your standards on them. It'd be like telling me to get of my shotgun from my closet. I imagine you can guess my response to that.

well, yes, i guess i`de agree with that- although i used to chew, also. but i can`t say as i`ve ever run into a woman who dipped or chewed. not that they don`t exist- just kinda rare, i think. but thanks to all for their replies. i asked because, as one responder said- if someone REALLY was trying to quit, i`de want to encourage her.

Being an ex-smoker I have never pushed my standards on others because I know it is their decision to smoke or not. When I was an intern my co-worker invited me to lunch and when we arrived, there were 2 other co-workers who were smokers waiting there to eat lunch also. When I told them I choose not to be around smoke, they walked away, making it very clear they were going to smoke no matter if I was there or not. The co-worker who asked me to join them was horrified and embarrassed. Needless to say I had to leave and go eat lunch elsewhere. That was nothing but rude in my book...especially to a new intern.
I have other stories...almost got fired because of a co-worker smoking in the office...the only reason I wasn't fired is because I played the Ohio Law card....a**holes. They can smoke all the f**k they want, its their life, JUST TAKE IT OUTSIDE!

Okay well those stories are dated at best. You can't smoke in any work place anymore...
And I think most of us smokers would agree the ones you are talking about are the exception to the rule, and not the rule.

First of all I would inform u that I am a smoker. No matter if I smoke around you, it is on my clothes. I do not smoke around my friends that dont smoke but I do exit to the out doors to have a smoke and then return. I am not offened to be asked not to smoke. I just ask the same respect to excuse me when I go outside to avoid insulting you.

They smoke at mine but someone reported them to osha this weekend. Wasn`t me and mostly for other things. Guess you can`t leave the door open. Probably the appraiser it was cold the day he was there. None of us have a tow motor license oil on the floor and can`t lock the machines so they can`t be started when working on them. IRS was there not long ago. Would think they would hide the ash trays on days like that. Always beer in the frig oops.

OSHA has nothing to do with smoking violations. They aren't the ones that will issue a fine. The health department takes care of that.
