there's not enough salmon for either a commercial run nor a sports run this season. The claim is "global warming" is effecting the oceans. I'm more inclined to think it's the rivers and the way they are being handled. I for one am going to miss having fresh salmon. Any one else have a thought on this? Or care?
Ok I probably should have placed this in the "outdoors" catagory. Shzzzzzzz... haven't had my first cup of coffee yet.

It seems this has been a growing problem for the past couple of decades. I love salmon; it is my favorite fish! Our grizzlies love it too.

I am not exactly sure why I feel compelled to reply...Yet here I go...Having fished the upper Trinity extnsively for the past two years I have found the supply of 6-8 pound salmon and 6-8 pound steelhead to be reasonable. It should be noted that the fish I caught and released were hatchery fish (clipped adipose fins). This means that the Fish and Game Program (pretty sure the hatchery is in Lewiston) which release thousands of tiny minnows each year is working.
I feel that the condition of the fishery (from oceans to rivers) is similar the the current mortgage crisis. Simply a matter of greed and stupidity. I don't mean to simplify a very complex senario...yet this is not much different than a supply and demand deal. The demand is huge and profitable thus becoming attractive regardless of the environmental impact.
That's why I love mankind!

Hi Michael and welcome. Having not fished that particular area I cannot say anything with authority. Having, however, many friends and relatives from yours and surrounding areas telling me the same...5-8 pounds for salmon and steel-head...but their definition of "reasonable runs" doesn't sound like the same as yours. But theirs is also a 30 to 45 year span. In observing what the "authorities" are releasing in the matter of water...ie...amount...timing...and youngsters, as well as the concerted efforts on effluent/raw sewage waters being released....just seems it would have more impact on the conservation efforts than "global warming". Could this be "too much interference?" It might just be me....but...the impact of commercial fishing/sport fishing in the oceans waters and the interaction of humans in the attempts at "conservation" make more of a logical answer than the catch all phrase....global warming. It just pisses me off. Sorry. I am becoming quite militant over that phrase (and trust me I'm a pretty laid back kinda lady. lol).

My point exactly. To blame this on the environment is a farse. I have fished these very same waters in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. I am greatful that we have fish to catch.
My definition of a good fishery is catching two or three fish a day without the use of hand grenades or treble hooks. I fish for sport, not food or profit.
This deal was created by mankind and, in my less than humble opinion, can only be solved

Nice to speak with you
