I am a single dad. Each year at Mother's day my 9 year old goes to the nurse sick at her stomach. I know it is coming. (my wife died 4 years ago). I e mail her teachers and let them know it is coming and that sometimes they can make her the 'class leader' or the helper that week. It keeps her busy and it takes some of the focus off the 'mother's day stuff'. All of the teachers have been very helpful and kind. When they do special Mother/daughter stuff, sometimes a friend sits in and when we first moved here her teacher sat in with my daughter as her special guest.
It would have been nice if the school could have gotten a male coach or teacher or principal or something to make your kid feel special.
It is hard but we are all in unique situations. Most people want to understand-- it just takes them a while.
I'm not sure how this got in to be a 'bashing the school' discussion. The schools my kids attend are excellent and it is not their fault my life is more difficult than some other folks. They don't always understand but-- with kindness and explaination most want to help.

my kids and most of the teachers where i am know me like the back of their hands. i'm very involved with the schools and sit on the board as well.
when father's day comes around...my kids make me the gifts and no matter what i always go to the school for special days and events. men do look at me and ask a lot of questions....but i just smile at them and say" I CAN BE HERE I HAVE JUST ONE BLACK HAIR ON MY CHEST'....LOL
