Gypsy, I think it's because when the cup is bigger they only make the around size bigger?
In other words if you have a C cup they assume you must be 34 or 36 around or something. If you have a D or DD they assume you must be like 40 around? It's hard to find a small around size with a bigger cup! Right???

copper, it is those assumptions that drive me crazy! (And yeah, have joked about gaining 20lbs just so I can find a bra that fits properly LOL)

I agree with copper!
I have a hell of a hard time finding a bra that fits because DDD's usually start at 38, and I'm a 36! Sometimes you can find a small fitting 38, but mostly I have to get mine specially made.

As for myself, i am a 36C. The number 36 reflects the number of inches measured around the torso just underneath the breasts. IN other words: the size of your chest barrell. So, I am 36 inches around my upper body NOT including the breasts; numbers such as 34,36,38 40, etc. have NOTHING to do with the size of one's breasts. The letters A,B,C,D,DD,,DDD, reflect how much fat tissue is sitting on your chest,so yes, only the letters indicate the actual size of the breast mound. Personally, i hate the discomfort of wearing a bra & so i don't. That is until i want to look my best & then i definitly harness those babies up;don't want to look sloppy in a sweater!
