96 T-bird catalytic converters? |

Ok , so she's been boogging down on me. When I go up a hill , no power. After inspection, it came down to the catalitic converters. And there are 4 of them. I couldn't afford to replace them and friend helped me(I think) and replaced one with a pipe.She, perked right up, more power!!!! but didnt last long. Back at the garage agin, about a wk latter. This time He dropped the muffler and stuff to get to the other converters, then bord them out. Yeah I know It's illegal.
My engine light, will this never go off now? and I keep asking I should I get a tune up. I have been trying to read everything I can. And I did find, after you had removed the converters the car would run lean.And to make adjustments. But my brother says leave it alone.But I still think she's not right, but I do have more power. Am I just paranoid, what else should I ask, or do?

pull the converters down and use a hammer and chisel on the inside of them to hollow them out, then put them back inplace. that way when the inspection people look under your car they will be still there. as for the check engine light take your car to autozone or any other good parts place most will hook your car up to a code reader and see what the problem is when they clear the codes the light will go out. after about 75 miles or so if it comes back on then take it back have them read codes again and then you will know what to fix.

This is what we did. and still I have the light. The guy that is helping me told me, not to take it anywhere else , because it was illegal.... maybe he thinks I'd turn him in. No, I am so greatful to him. But he He said the light is going to stay on. And it is because the converters are still reading on the computer, even though he has board them out. hummmmmm I will take it to Auto Zone , you are right. I should have known to do this. Thanks sooo much. I hate this shit.!!!

Hey top, I had a 80 T-Bird that had TWO on it. I think it has to do if it's from CA or somewhere, not sure. Some states don't ever check like here and Florida. My dodge truck doesnt have one on it. It was taken off to put flow masters on it. The engine light stays on all the time, doesnt mean a thing, just ignore it. Yeah it's because of the 02 sensors. If you take it anywhere to be put on a machine it'll just bumfuzzle them unless you tell them up front. If you have no inspection, take em off, ignore the light. With an engine that old and that many miles expect to loose some power. WE all get old..lol. Also try, cleaning your breather (air filters) , new plugs and wires..it'll help and run some fuel system cleaner through it. Ps..and if you never floor her, do that to clean out some of the buildup.

I am going to guess your friend was not a mechanic?
There only at most 2 converters on the car.
There are resonators that look a little like
converters, If your engine light is staying on,
you would never get it past inspection in NY.
Vehicles in NYS have to be hooked up to state
computer networks for inspection of vehicles.
Becareful who you go to, dont tell them there
are 4 converters on your car, they will charge
you for 4 and just put the two on there.
You cant get more performance by getting rid of
or dis-emboweling these converters. The Computer
systems along with the sensors all over the
engine will give you max power when the system has
not got a defect in the system.
First check would be oxy sensors
map sensor-your friend just cost you a big repair
bill.

Sorry I have been mistaken. My car has 3 converters. The pipe runs in a y. the first. one converter on a straight pipe that then branches out, to the other 2 on the sides. I googled it.And looked it up .Before we decided to bore them all out. However I still had the code reading it is the converters. I have googlel this, as well. and there are different opinions on the light. but so far I am getting it will stay on. forever. But, Now I have another problem. I was on my way to auto zone to get the o2 sensor checked. and the car quit. wouldn't start. so now I get a tow , back to the garage.This time it is the harmonic balance. It was so lose, it should have fallen out before now. So i guess i sould be greatful. Im safe. sooo, now I have to ask.could this have ruined my converters. I seen the stuff that came out off the converters. it was one big melted blob. What next. I still will check sensors. but damn . this is hurtin.  I have cried all day.But thank guys.

on a 96 model you did make a mistake by just hollowing the cats out...it is causing the o2 sensors to not read accurately...and can cause a loss in fuel economy...by law you only need one cat per pipe...my advise is to replace with no more than law requires..and that will stop your check engine light...i guarantee if they run the codes you will get bank 1 sensor 2, bank 2 sensor 1, bank 1 sensor 1, bank 2 sensor 2...they will show rich and lean burns because it has no proper control of how much fuel to dump because of the loss of back pressure causing a lower exhaust temperature....it isn't that easy to fool an obd2 computer..but i do know as well that there are kits that are made so you can get rid of them and fool the sensors to say they are reading right..but i have yet to find them..
if it had 3 just replace the main one..(the larger of the three) and it should stop tripping codes..

thanks . its makes sense . I will get back to the converters and the sensors, after I get the hormonic balance replaced. I had to order it.... who knows how long.
