Pirate,

It sounds like your school, and/or system, is very similar to Tansu Self Defense System. Our philosophy is like what you described -learn to use ANYTHING to defend yourself. A pen or pencil make GREAT stabbing weapons, a hot cup of coffee in the face is a GREAT distraction that will allow you to take out your attacker while he tries get the hot liquid off his face. Fighting from the ground, from a chair, prone, sitting, a self defense situation can happen anywhere, and under any conditions.

I like the way you think about self defense!

Good Training!

i wouldnt keep anyone from doing what they wanted at an older age. if it was my wife or girlfriend ? i guess i would be more prone to worry but on the other hand ,if i knew and i seen how happy it made her to what she liked! i would be by her side and i would also respect her feelings towards her hobbies. and yes it would hurt my feelings if she got
hurt.i would want to be there to help heal her wounds ,and help lick her wounds........lol. lick some other things while at it .....opps i got off track for a second there............lmbutt off/ take care everyone and have a great day.

You are never too old. At my gym (American Top Team) there are a few people who started when they were a little on the older side, no worries.

Quote from gapeach7777:
Am I too old to start?
like chuck liddell always says, "I'll keep fighting till my body gives up" so if you feel able enough to learn and your body can take the hard hard work, y not go for it...your as young as u feel, u look young too.

Like so many have said already, you're not too old, however if I were you I would try to find something in your area that provided everything you are looking for because there is a multitude of systems and teaching styles. Most styles have a PT regiment of some sort, so you will get in better shape no matter what. However, if you are looking for practical self-defense you should go with something like Brazilian ju-jitsu, muay Thai, krav maga or systema.

P.S.- Looking for a martial arts school is like anything else, shop around! Also any martial art school worth it's weight will let you at least observe some classes before starting, and most will let you participate in at least one class. Inspite of where you go you should try to incorporate grappling and ground fighting in your regiment as much as possible, since 9 out of 10 fights end up on the ground.

Don't let anything stop you from what you want to do. I have just recovered from open heart surgery 4 months ago, & am beginning to do karate movemments again. I began in karate when I was in the early 20tys, had a dojo ...had an 80ty year old come in, he lasted a month...told him to adapt whatever movements would fit his body situation. I have practiced up to this time.

Your only to old if you think so. I am currently working on my black belt in Tae Kwon Do. I am the youngest person in my class. the other person testing is in her 50's, so if you want to start then go for it.

There is a lot of good advice here. First, what are your goals (self defense, exercise, competing in tournaments, exploring aspects of movement)? Good sources of information include teachers in local studios: they usually know more about various systems and whether their system is what will meet your goals or not; they also usually know other teachers in your area and can recommend teachers that they respect in various styles. If you are looking for self defence, my personal favorites are jiujitsu (there really isn't much difference between Brazillian and Japanese so long as you have a good teacher), and wing chun. Taiji can be very good if you find a teacher that goes into the martial aspects. Bagua is also very good. These arts all deal very much with close in fighting of the sort women are most likely to deal with, defending against situations starting with someone trying to grab you. These arts also excel at learning to control a larger attacker.
