Bond and His Girls

James Bond is one of the most popular characters in the history of movies and film. This character always has a woman by his side, though he isn’t always dating them and he prefers his martinis shaken, not stirred. It’s no wonder he’s lasted over four decades.

History of the Character

The history of James Bond begins in 1953 when Ian Fleming created the character. He finished twelve full-length books and two collections of short stories before his death. A series of other writers including John Pearson, Kingsley Amis, John Gardner, Raymond Benson and Sebastian Faulks worked on James Bond novels after his death. There were also a series of books by Charlie Higson that focused on James Bond as a young man.

When the books first started, Bond was a Commander and officer in the MI6. Fleming purposefully chose a plain sounding name that belied the lifestyle of the agent. The character was established as Scottish, though his mother came from a well known French family. Bond first appeared in the novel Casino Royale. The series continued with the 2008 release Devil May Care, a new Bond novel created by one of the older writers.

James Bond on Film

EON Productions bought the rights for the James Bond novels during the late 1950s. The first movie was created in 1962 when Sean Connery took on the role of Bond in Dr. No. Connery portrayed Bond in six movies before George Lazenby took on the role for one film. Roger Moore also played Bond in seven movies, Timothy Dalton played the character in two movies and Pierce Brosnan took on the role in four movies. The modern day James Bond movies used Daniel Craig as they returned to the early books and needed a younger actor to play the role.

There are 22 James Bond movies released and nearly all are based on the books created by Fleming. Quantum of Solace the latest movie, was based on a short story by the author. As of 2009 the series had grossed $4 billion at the box office. Casino Royale, with a worldwide box office of nearly $600 million is the top grossing movie in the franchise.

The Bond Girls

James Bond never needed any help finding a date because he had the Bond Girls. These were women who appeared in the movies, either as a foe or a love interest. Occasionally a Bond Girl appeared in the movie only as a background character. She didn’t have any real purpose in the film, except to show that Bond was always surrounded by beautiful women. These characters appeared in the books, but were more popular in the movies.

The first Bond Girl is generally considered Honey Ryder played by Ursula Andress in the 1962 film Dr. No. Fatima Blush from Never Say Never Again, Elektra King from The World is Not Enough and Miranda Frost from Die Another Die are other Bond Girls. There was also Tracy di Vincenzo from On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and vesper Lynd from Casino Royale, both of whom won the heart of Bond only to die.
