Dating with a Sexually Transmitted Disease

Dating can be an exciting time of self discovery, where one can learn about life, love, and partnership. However, few things in life bring out more anxiety, doubt, and challenges to one’s self esteem than dating. There is no perfect formula to dating, because dating in of itself is all about trial and error. For all the published books in stores regarding dating, the only way to be successful at it is to put one’s self out there, and simply date.

But what does a person do when their adventures in dating takes a very wrong turn? What happens when the thrill of “hooking up” leaves a person with a diagnosis that makes them feel “messed up”? This is what it’s like for a person that contracts a sexually transmitted disease, otherwise known as an STD. While most STDs are curable with antibiotics, there are classes of STDs that aren’t spread via bacteria. These STDs are viruses, and while there are currently treatments to stabilize the disease, there are no permanent cures for them. These viruses are diseases known as Herpes, HPV, and HIV/AIDS.

For the single person that carries one of these STDs, it can seem and feel like they are the most vile and unworthy person in the world. The diagnosis will forever change life as the infected person knows it. At one point in time, a person infected with HIV had nothing to look forward to in life. Fortunately, at this moment in history, a person with HIV can live a long, prosperous life filled with friends, and even romance! And for the person with Herpes or HPV, nothing major needs to change at all in their everyday life. However, they will have to be a lot more responsible to themselves, and certainly to others.

Many people in the past suffered in silence, and were made to feel alone and rejected. No human being should live like this, and thanks to advances in technology, they don’t have to. There are many resources on the internet that allows a single person to get support, love, caring, and information. Today’s single that carries the virus of a permanent STD, with precautions, can enjoy the same benefits of non-infected singles. Most important, they can feel strengthened and empowered. Life does indeed go on for them, even with an STD diagnosis.
