The Greatest Love of All: Developing a Relationship with Self

Having a relationship with yourself is the most meaningful relationship that you will ever have. By maintaining a healthy relationship with yourself, you will also have the means to build healthy relationships with others. Many people do not realize the importance of developing a relationship with yourself. Strengthening your self-relationship can make an everlasting change in your life. Let's face it, it can be extremely difficult to create healthy relationships with other people when we are not entirely happy with ourselves. There are many ways that you can work on a self-relationship for happiness and wellness.

As babies, our natural instincts told us to put ourselves first. Needs were meant by simply demanding what we wanted. Children are often taught that putting yourself first is a selfish act. They are taught to reverse their natural instincts, putting others before themselves. This logic can cause frustration when trying to care about everyone's needs before your own. Just imagine being the horse of a horse-drawn carriage full of passengers. By placing the carriage before the horse, you're created a hindrance. While caring for others is an important characteristic to have as a person, one must put themselves first. When you are happy and comfortable in your own skin, you will then have the means to care for others more deeply and successfully.

The first step in taking better care of yourself is to get to know yourself in a deeper sense. This is more than just your basic identity, such as your name, sex, age, and occupation. You must become familiar with who you are as a person and what you are feeling. Do you pay attention to your own feelings and not just to other people? One way to get to know yourself better is to spend quality time with yourself. Drop everything that you're doing and spend a few minutes with yourself. This concept is known as self-observation. By spending a few quiet moments with yourself, you can begin to assess your behaviors, your thought process, and determine the endless possibilities of your personal growth. This will lead to a better understanding of yourself and allow you to perform better self-care.

Inside of each of us, there is a part that realizes the things that are best for us. Many of us our too caught up in the hussel and bussel of our daily lives and ignore these warning signs. Life goes by so fast that you may forget to take these important moments to care for yourself. It only takes a minute to stop what you are doing and realize the things in your life that may be off track. Take time during each day to discover new and interesting things about yourself. Think about the changes you should make to yourself for your own well-being. Commit to these changes by encouraging yourself to take better care of your own needs and wants. Doing this on a regular basis can make a huge difference in your life.

The more that you learn about yourself, the better you will be at getting along with others. This is because most people will treat others the way that they treat themselves. For example, if you are critical with your own behaviors, you are probably critical of how others behave. By becoming more tolerable of yourself, you become more tolerant of others and others will become more tolerant of you in the process.

Begin to nurture and care about your own needs, as much as possible. It is never selfish to maintain a healthy relationship with yourself and put yourself in front of others at times. Doing what another person wants against your better interest will only lead to resentment and frustration in the end. It is only a matter of time before you may begin consciously or unconsciously trying to “get back” at that person. While it may be hard to admit the truth, it's always better to get things off your chest for your own happiness. To prevent problems from building up, remember to always take care of yourself first.
