The founder of Playboy is Hugh Hefner, who is also known as Hef. Hefner was born in 1926 in Chicago, Illinois. He worked as a copywriter for Esquire magazine until 1952 when he left because they refused to give him a raise. In 1953 he raised enough money, and produced the first issue of Playboy from his kitchen table in his apartment. The magazine went on stands in December of 1953 and featured Marylin Monroe on the cover but had no cover date because Hef was unsure there would be a second issue of the magazine.

The first issue of the magazine sold more than 50,000 copies, and Hef was able to pay for the costs of producing a second issue. Playboy became a huge success and grew at an enormous rate. By the end of the 1950's the magazine was selling at a rate of more than one million copies a month. To celebrate his accomplishment, Hefner threw the first Playboy Jazz Festival at the Chicago Stadium in Illinois and at the time it was called the greatest weekend in the history of jazz.

With all the magazine's success, Hef was able to buy the first Playboy Mansion in Chicago where he also opened the first Playboy club in 1960. In the early 1970's Hefner unveiled Playboy Enterprises and his magazine was selling over seven million copies a month, he had opened 23 Playboy clubs, as well as resorts, hotels, and casinos. Playboy Enterprises also included a modeling agency, book publishing, merchandising, a tv and motion picture company, and a record label. In 1971, Hef bought the second Playboy mansion in Los Angeles, California, and in 1975 he decided to make LA his permanent home. Hugh went on to marry, and have more kids (he previously had a wife and had two older children) and all the while his enterprise continued to have huge success. In the 1980's Hefner suffered a stroke, and Christie now plays a huge part in running the company.

Over the years Playboy has found huge success and still continues to thrive today, as does the empire's founder. Hefner currently resides in his California Mansion and is currently in his 80's. Playboy has featured countless celebrities as well as models who were little known before there shot in the magazine, many of whom Hef wound up dating at one point or another. The entire Playboy empire, as well as Hugh Hefner himself are considered icons.
