Ingrid Bergman was one of Hollywood’s finest actresses in 1940’s and 1950’s, starring in some of the biggest hits of the time. However, her dating a famous Italian movie director was one of the biggest scandals of the day, nearly leading to the end of her career. Ingrid Bergman was born on August 29, 1915 in Stockholm, Sweden. Bergman had a difficult childhood, losing both of her parents by the time she was thirteen years old. After her father’s death she moved in with an Aunt, who also unfortunately passed away only months later. Despite her early hardships, she realized at a young age that she wanted to be an actress. At the age of seventeen, she entered a competition and won a scholarship to the Royal Dramatic Theatre School. During her first year, she did well in her acting, which led to some film work during school breaks. More opportunities turned up for Bergman, and as a result, she ended up dropping out of school after only one year. During this time, Bergman married Swedish Dentist Petter Lindström when she was 21. Her first big break occurred in 1938 when Hollywood Producer David O. Selznick brought her to the United States to star in “Intermezzo: A Love Story”. After completing the movie, she returned to her family in Sweden. However, in 1940, she moved permanently to the United States, with her husband and daughter following shortly. In the 1940’s Bergman had a great deal of success starring in movies such as “Casablanca”, “For Whom The Bell Tolls”, “Gaslight”, “Notorious” and “Joan of Arc.” All of these movies were critical and financial successes. However, in 1950, Bergman met Italian Director Roberto Rossellini while filming the movie “Stromboli”. During the movie she fell in love with Rossellini, and became pregnant. The news of the affair and pregnancy shocked Hollywood and Bergman left her husband and daughter and moved to Italy. Due to the affair and divorce, Bergman stayed in Italy and made movies. But, Hollywood had not forgotten Bergman, and in 1956 she made a return to the American cinema with “Anastasia”. Over the next several years Bergman would work in films in Hollywood as well as in Europe. Bergman continued to work up until her death in 1982. Despite a rocky personal life, Bergman is considered one of the finest actresses of her generation. During her career she won three Academy Awards, two Emmy Awards and one Tony Award.
