Oscar Wilde was a famous playwright, author, and poet. He was born to an Anglo-Irish family in 1854. He was educated at home until he was 9 and then attended Portora Royal School until the age of 16. Once he left Portora Royal, he studied at Trinity College in Dublin. He was known for his wit and became one of the most known playwrights of the Victorian Era. Famous for such plays as The Importance of Being Earnest and Lady Windermere's Ghost he quickly became a celebrity of this time. While his work was vastly loved and admired, it was his dating habits that became headline worthy.
Wilde eventually met and courted Florence Balcombe. However, Balcombe soon became engaged to and later married Bram Stoker. The singles life didn't last long though. He married Constance Lloyd in 1884. Although he did marry, Wilde's sexuality was still to be determined. He has been considered to be both homosexual and bi-sexual, but Wilde often referred to himself as belonging to a culture of male love that was inspired by the Greek paederastic tradition. He was preoccupied with same sex love and continued to have relations with men for years to come. After a libel suit Wilde filed against the Marquess of Queensberry, the scandals of Wilde's private life began to emerge. Soon his association with male prostitutes, cross-dressers, blackmailers, and homosexual brothels were recorded and it was Wilde himself who was soon arrested for "gross indecency." Oscar Wilde spent two years in prison following his arrest where he was visited daily by Lord Alfred Douglas.

Oscar Wilde was a man full of controversy. When his personal life appeared as public knowledge, people were shocked and appalled. He was released from prison in 1897 and fled England and France. He assumed the name Sebastian, which he used until his death 3 years later. With all of his fortune brought forth in his earlier years, Oscar Wide died a broken man.
