Women and Gender Email Lists

Mail lists or listservs allow people who share the same interests to communicate and update members on important developments and new information. Many organizations use listservs instead of, or in addition to, newsletters to inform their supporters. Participants opt-in, or request, that the list owner add them to the group listserv.

Listservs are different from forums, where members must navigate to the site, login and read posts. Listserv members automatically receive information about the topics that interest them in their inbox. Many women's groups and organizations use listservs to inform their members about a variety of topics, including breast cancer, motherhood, feminism, business and international development.

Some lists are announcement only. Many are set up as discussion lists. In these lists, the person in charge collects the responses from their recipients and adds them to the group's regularly scheduled emails. Discussion lists allow participants to interact with each other and the list owners. They can respond to the email announcements and to the other participants' comments.

Although some groups have forums and listservs, you must sign up to receive their information by email. Over the past 20 years, the process has become much simpler. However, the organization's choice of email list management software determines what steps you will need to take to participant in their email listserv. The most common approach is sending an email to the list's server. Instructions will be provided. Search by topic at Yahoo Groups and Topica. They are good sources for women's listservs. Or get started by subscribing to a few of the more popular women-oriented lists.
