Typically Unions pay their apprentices around $19 an hour to start with raises of around $.50 every six months for 5 years. In that 5 year duration, you will be required to go to school. When you graduate your apprenticeship, you are typically sent to job sites that require lots of man power, or you could end up jumping from site to site. Non-Union employers typically pay depending on experience in the field and whether or not you have experience running jobs (usually multiple jobs like I used to do), and delegating the workload to the men on each given site. For me, I topped out at $22 an hour when I was working Non-Union, not too bad really, but take out benefits, lunches, taxes, and gas for your vehicle and you are earning around $16 an hour. Not horrible but still well below the C.O.L. My advice is to try to join the Electrical Union where you live, they usually have great packages including Pension and Annuity, something you WILL need when you're too old to work anymore. Can't beat that and the retirement is pretty good. Work Union, it's more lucrative. The apprenticeship is 5 years with an associates degree in applied science with successful completion.
