The largest full moon of 2013, a so-called "supermoon," will light up the night sky this weekend, but there's more to this lunar delight than meets the eye.
On Sunday, June 23, at 7 a.m. EDT (1100 GMT), the moon will arrive at perigee — the point in its orbit bringing it closest to Earth), a distance of 221,824 miles (356,991 kilometers). Now the moon typically reaches perigee once each month (and on some occasions twice), with their respective distances to Earth varying by 3 percent.
But Sunday's lunar perigee will be the moon's closest to Earth of 2013. And 32 minutes later, the moon will officially turn full. The close timing of the moon's perigee and its full phase are what will bring about the biggest full moon of the year, a celestial event popularly defined by some as a "supermoon."

The transpired during the last SuperMoon...
There I was mindin' my own business when I got an email from a lady...
She said she didn't find me via DH, but saw one of my posts, in cyberland, and thought it was kewl...
OK, I thought, you have my attention... (Falling fer thet ole... tell a guy he's kewl an he'll follow ya anywhere routine...  
Turned out, she was in Ocean Shores... She had just moved here and didn't know anyone yet...
Ta make a long story short... Yer prolly yawnin' about now...
She gave me her cell number, but it was long distance... 
Come ta fine out she had a dead battery and asked if I knew where she could get help...
I gave her Shorty's number... (He's the local mechanic)... And wished her good luck...
I guess the point ta my story is... Beware of full moons...
 Is thet a true story?

Well if it has an effect on tides for one and if you lived near the ocean it may have some kind of timing on flooding..would ya think...i'd like an alert when there is a full moon...and again it has an affect on somehow on us posters, right Trish..lol..

I just got a new digital camera ( yeah, I finally caught up with technology.  ) so am planning on taking a few pictures of it the weather permitting. Hey!! I could stand in front of my mirror and take a few pics of myself also. Maybe one with the "duck" face?

Watching my yanks game and tv cameras focus on the moon it already looked full and giving off bright reflections ...I'd give it some pasta f*gioli and that should full it out...does the moon like Italian food...

Jimbo~ On June 22 and 23, the Supermoon will make its closest approach to Earth appearing full, bright and huge in the eastern sky.
Trisha~ My area might have thunderstorms. I hope to see the moon clearly, too. It will be something to reflect upon.

Zoe, I love anything to do with nature. Living on Lake Erie, we have the most beautiful sunsets. I enjoy going to the beach and walking along the sands edge.

They are saying 14% bigger and 30 % brighter
I have to go close to I-90, on upper Peach street. That will probably be the best place to see it.

I didn't get to the moon when it first started rising, the clouds were in he way. I drove south and east of Erie and still didn't see the moon so I came home. Finally at 9:20 I could see it from my home.
Maybe I'll get up early and see if I can see it before it sets.

I have seen one (supermoon) rise over the Caribbean ---- it is the most amazing sight in the world. (The moon is always closer and looks larger at the Equator but the supermoon is breath-taking.)

just watched the moon coming up over the neighbors house, and noticed, in the moonlight, a couple small bats working the street.. they were doing some serious bug catching.. it was cool.. and the moon is so pretty

I am going to try to take a photo of it tonight with my telescopic lens but don't know how well it will turn out my lens only goes to 200, and there a lot of billowy clouds out there.
