Trojans Disguised as Breaking News
Wednesday August 13, 2008
The storm of scary sounding email continues, this time disguised as breaking news alerts from CNN and MSNBC. The email "From" address is spoofed. The fake address may be "CNN Alerts", "Daily Top 10", or "MSNBC Breaking News". Subject lines include:

CNN.com Daily Top 10
CNN Alerts: My Custom Alert
CNN Alerts: Breaking news
msnbc.com: BREAKING NEWS: (bogus headline)

The fake news alerts are a continuation of a rash of spam that bear much resemblance to the all-too-familiar tactics of the Storm family of trojans.

People, this has been known about for quite some time, but new folks may not know about this...

I have an excellent spam & virus checker on my ISP's webby site, and so much gets filtered out without being placed in my mailbox...

Unless you sign up for a service, you need to ask yourself: "WHY is this being sent to me..???"

Is it the "good internet fairies" that sent this..??? Or is a spam or a virus...???

Breaking News: there are NO "good internet fairies"...

These creeps DEPEND on you to THINK that the messages are sent to YOU for some altruistic reason...

THE RULE is you NEVER open ANY email from a stranger (individual or a company. Period..!!!

You can NOT simply go by the returm (senders) email address...they have ways of disguising who they actually are, and before you know it, you've been redirected to the web site they want to send you to (for nefarious reasons)...usually you end up being sent to another country, and several countries are known for a very high number of scams, spams, ripoffs, and viruses...this is a worldwide problem, and just because the senders email address is a dot com, it doesn't mean it came from a nice little old lady here in the USA...

For example, one of the current scams is to send an email that looks like it came from a well known bank, often asking you to "update your info", or letting you know that you have a statement online ready to view, and before you know it, you've just been suckered into clicking through to an address in the email they sent...

And I *NEVER* use online banking, so ANY msg from a bank is 1000% bogus & is deleted without opening it...

Spammers & hackers send out thousands of mails with a fake "senders address" hoping that even 1% of the recipients will respond...

These evil people are quite often located in communist or former communist coutries, also asia & africa, & with a poor local econemy YOU are viewed as easy pickings...

It's not a matter of you being a dumb cluck... they depend on you not *knowing* and you thinking that EACH email message in your email inbox is specifically sent to you by some nice person you've never met...

Thanks Taurus, for posting,
what is the spam and virus checker that you use, please?
We can all learn what is the best product today, updated often.

I have received KNBC (LA tv station) news alerts
and CNN alerts for years) without problem.

I now receive a large portion of news alerts
in my junk mail folder...
already directed to the trash...
so the IP address must be different
than the original notice service....
still in the regular mail. Warning was correct
at my house...

Just and FYI:

If you use the preview pane in Outlook (or any other program for that matter,) you're actually opening the email. https://DateHookup.dating/images/smiley/surprised-040.gif

My ISP has Postini built in, and it uses the McAfee engine, and when I'm at the postini webby site, I can look at a suspicious email AND doing so does not open the email ON MY MACHINE, but merely is a safe display...

For email I use Pegasus

As a matter of (my) personal choice, I'm not such a news junkie that I need to be bothered by "news alerts"...bonafide news comes on everynight at 6:oo PM on my TV...

You see, Wine, because a large number of folks DO subscribe to "news alerts", the scammers take advantage fof that, hoping you won't notice their bogus emails mixed in with legit emails...

I keep a minimum of email lists & subscriptions, so it's easier to see the bogus stuff...

I use Qwest....
for the DSL line.

I am not aware that it includes Postini...
or any other junk mail filter. (???) anyone know?

I like getting the news alerts...they post them 24/7,
and with the world moving as fast as it does, and the
fact that I live in small town America, I like getting
the news before 5 or 6 PM....
I am a news junkie...
