That will depend on what kind of crops you want to grow. Here in Fla you can grow a wide range of things. But land is kind of high.

a corn or bean crop is pretty straight forward. how do you plan on planiting and harvesting? without having your own equipment the option is having a custom farming outfit do the planting and harvesting......

My advice would be to start with a small truck farm.Corn, cukes, and watermelons grow well here. Easy to harvest and sell to.

Just bought one in New Jersey----and since then I found out that there is no more dairy farms in NJ--they are dead and for those that still try---its a hopeless cause. The crops growing idea was NOT for inexperienced people---it costs to have the big machines prepare the land--keep it going and then harvest it all---unless a 150,000 dollars machine to harvest the crops is not a lot of money to you. Not to mention the other machines and attachments you will need. And then there is hired help, insurance---on and on and on. I tried raising game birds--pheasants--almost 250,000 of them---that was a screwed up way to waste my money. No money in game birds after the costs of raising and feeding and providing for them. Hunting clubs closed up---so who in the hell would buy a pheasant??? I am now going to buy a log splitter and a big new chain saw and try my hand at firewood. The small farms are dead---but, I am enjoying the fresh air and the still, quiet evenings. YOU DON"T NEED A FARM___don't kid yourself----don't complicate your life.

The best small crop farms are in Michigan's fruitbelt. Small farms can be profitable in the right locations. There is demand for local homegrown produce, and consumers will pay a premium price for fresh quality.

In Oregon one of the biggest crops is Christmas trees. The hardest part is the selling, not growing. I had neighbors that would rent an 18 wheeler and take them to Las Vegas to sell.

I am a beef and hay farmer but if you are looking for a way to make bank on a small farm, your best bet is to put out a big organic garden. I got a neibor in my area that makes 6 figures off off a 35 acre organis garden. He sells alot to kroger in town and at the local farmers market.

some of the best places I can think of or states would be Minnesota, Central Kansas, and even places here in New Mexico! There are even parts of eastern Wyoming and Western Nebraska where a small farmer of that sort could make a good go of it and still do pretty good with vegetables like corn, zucchini, squash, strawberries, beans, carrots, tomatoes, and here in New Mexico, green and red chilies!

Here in Oklahoma alot are making bank raising cattle, and supplimenting ranch with oil and gas leases! The biggest thing, as with any business mind, is to diversify your
investments, and by all means! Insurance, Insurance...OOOOh did I say Insurance?...lol
