Acer 5000 laptop.

Lately I've had my laptop to shut down on me. I noticed that it is doing this when I'm running youtube and usually have several tabs up on firefox while online. I can tell that it is overheating. This is something that only recently has been happening. Computer is about 20 months old... heavily used for internet surfing, date sites, chats, etc. Ya know... like i live on the damn thing...

overheating..most likely the heat sync..might need replaced.
Are you still under warranty, (extended I hope?)

You are running too many programs stressing the system, and
it is simply dieing on ya.

Are you using it on a hard surface, or a soft lap or blanket...
my Toshiba Pentium 4 laptop, is way too hot for laptop usage,
I have to use it on a hard surface to keep it running.
They replaced my heat sync, fan, bios, hard drive, you name it!
It is the processesor is too darn hot in mine, I am told..!

Winesong..
just my uninformed guess, based on my personal experience.

Overheating in laptops is a big problem. Most manufacturers have small openings for the airflow.

Depending on which laptop it is (I have 3) I have to open them up and clean things out. Also, if your fan is making noise the bearings may be worn out causing it to run slower, and move less air.

Believe it or not, most laptops are made to run correctly, so if you are overheating then I would suspect the airflow.

Next, power! I have had to fix the motherboards due to the cord being tripped over and disconnecting the external power. Believe it or not, this also affected battery power.

Finally, the OS can also cause this. Though you expect to see the Blue Screen of Death, it doesn't always happen this way. If this has started after a automatic update, or a software install you may have another problem and need to role back the software.

Good Luck,

Dave

Randy,
Matt use to run a little 8" fan beside of his lap top to keep his system cooled down.

Also, move the lamp up more so the heat off it will not add heat to your PC. You could move your lamp over some. Reverse the direction on it.

Make sure the air vents are not covered by something on your desk. I put files and things on my desk and they can get in the way of the vent. Try these simple steps and see if there is a difference. I also checked to see if it got dust in it. The motor running will suck up dust in the air vent.

Check your start up menu and see what programs are running in the background.

Photobucket has animated things that cause the computer to constantly run.

This is why I hate incredimail programs. They are constantly running whether you see them on the desk top or not.

U-tube may be taking up a lot of space on the hard drive when it is running causing the program to slow down, hesitate, start back up, slow down, hesitate.

See if you need to defrag and compress files for more disk space.

These are some things I learned in computer class and from my teenage kid who knows everything! LOL

Then you may have answered your own question the heat that is a desk top has a shut down temp when the processoe gets too hot it just shuts off, go look in your bios and see how close your processor is running to what your shut down temp is set at, I have to be honest in saying that i have had little experience with laptops and am not even sure they run the same way as a desktop but i cant see why they wouldnt, you could also be havung a power supply problem

Jan.. the lamp isn't the problem as I point it up toward the mirror to give good light reflection to the room. I put the lap top on a couple of pencils to increase air flow and have never seen a cooling matt at wally world..but will check them out today when I go buy a few groceries. I don't doubt that it is filled with dust as I've never had any covers off...and I'm sure it's jammed up with programs on the start up menu. It has been so long since I've tinkered with start up programs that I may need to be walked thru that one. I do know of one that needs to be removed because when I boot up I get the message that it isn't working properly ....and I don't want it to run any way...but have not been able to figure out how to remove it. Haven't really tried much as DH and a few email addresses is where I'm at 99% of the time. I frequently run Yahoo messenger at the same time.
Looks like I need to get my screw driver, vacuum cleaner out, and something to blow out the dust.

When blowing out the dust, use canned air. Though I will admit that I don't (because I let the board sit for a while and dry). Air compressors tend to condense the water that is naturally in the air and unfortunately it comes out that way too.

There is a program called MSCONFIG you can run from the start-run button. This will give you access to the startup programs. Or (better yet) go to www.mlin.net and download a copy of Startup.cpl. It will give you the same thing only friendlier.

There are a couple of styles of cooling mats. I like the pencil idea, getting air flow underneath is always a good idea. Though the balancing could be a problem

Hope this helps!

first questions that come in my mind are
do the fans kick on
how often and how long are they on
how is the airflow out the exhaust port (amount of air and temp of air)
the temp can be pulled from a program like mentioned above

picked up a chiller pad at wally world. Seems to have helped some but the problem happened again today while running youtube video. I took the access doors off and it still appears to be clean on the inside which absolutely amazes me. The exhausting air is hot enough to keep my coffee cup warm with no problem and could damn near melt a coax. I have noticed that the problem seems to be worst when the ambient room temp is very hot....above 80 deg F or so. I"m comfortable now with my skivies on but it's like summer with 84 deg temp... no a/c running today.

As others have posted the machine is overheating, googling on your model number will show that many owners have experienced the same problem. If it's still under warranty start chasing Acer, otherwise get a knowledgeable friend to take the unit apart and add some heat sink compound between the cpu and the heatpipe, it may help.
