i am trying to build an image of of xp with the hardware not registered to be able to put the image onto any computer without it blue screening. i am sure there is a way to unregister the hardware (cause corporate edition does not do it), bu tam running into problems doing it. i already have the product key issue resolved to be able to change it to the customers legal product key but the hardware part is beating me. i want to be able to pull the clean image to cut down install time.
any help is greatly appreciated, thanx

Never tried it with anything above 98SE but....
You could try disabling everything in the device manager except generic keyboard, mouse, standard VGA driver, IDE, Floppy, probably IDE CD/DVD drivers....
There's also something out there called "Tiny XP"

never thought about going through device manager, kept trying to go through registry. i will have to try disabling/removing there and see how it goes. thanx. the image i want to build is going to have all service packs and updates in it to make it quicker to install on customer computers, from what i am seeing about tiny xp i dont think it will work for what i am trying to do. i have done the slipstreaming of service packs and updates but it has little quirks with replacing files instead of amending them. when i use nlite and ryansvm. i figure if i can make an acronis image that is fully updated the normal way except the registered hardware it will save me a few hours and i can pass on savings to the customer.
again thanx for the idea.

If you make an image of one computer and expect to install that image on another , you will run into a host of driver issues

Download drive copy... It reads the actual disk and not the instructions and data. Buy it and use it according to the license. Used by PC manufacturers...

If all the hardware is identical that works fine, that's why OEMs use it when they're building a few thousand identical machines except for the serial and registration numbers.

It sounds like you have something like an HP or branded XP instulation that you are trying to clone and get it to boot on another computer and then change the product key to keep it legal. The most common is with MCE to keep the video encoders so you can use the TV tuner in another computer without buying them. Either way I have done it several times. Even changing the motherboard in a HP and getting it to boot with the same stuff that it came with from the factory, without going through what they call motherboard tattoing. What you have to do to unregister any of the hardware is to get another (unbranded) windows disc that matches your operating system. Next run the disc and go to repair the O/S. If you are not familiar with doing this, then you need to go to microsoft website and copy a list of all the commands to use. Like rebuild master boot record and rebuild .dll file and a bunch more. I can tell you this. For the other programs to work properly you will have to replace anything that the repair removes or changes. Either way it takes a long time to do it just to get the O/S to boot. Its much easier to use the disk and load it on the new hardware with the new product key and get the drivers on line and add the programs you want. I also use acronis and ghost9. With acronis I get a lot of this or that .dll file is missing or corrupt. If you type that in your address bar it will usually have something about that message at microsoft and give you instructions on how to repair just that part.. Hope this helps!
