Today on Tom Hartman, I heard some exciting news for Veterans who suffer from PTSD, TBI, Personality Adjustment Disorder, Sleep Disorders, and Chemical Exposure Symptoms.
A Ph.D. in Brain Neuroscience, Dr. Siegfreid Othmer, is offering free treatment to Veterans, with a list of clinics who he has trained in this technique. Results have been phenomenal!
http://www.homecoming4veterans.org/
Homecoming for Veterans (previously EEG4VETERANS) is a national outreach program to provide free Neurofeedback training for veterans for the rehabilitation of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and issues of brain performance resulting from traumatic brain injury, blast injury, concussion, whiplash, and chemical exposure.
The EEG Institute, a world leader in Neurofeedback research and training, and the Brian Othmer Foundation are offering this cutting-edge treatment, at no cost, for veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) through a network of clinicians across the country.
"The nation’s hard-pressed health care system for veterans is facing a potential deluge of tens of thousands of soldiers returning from Iraq with serious mental health problems brought on by the stress and carnage of war..." This sober appraisal appears in an article by Scott Shane of the New York Times (A Flood of Troubled Soldiers Is in the Offing, Experts Predict). About one soldier in six is reporting anxiety, depression, or symptoms of PTSD. With a total number of soldiers having served in Iraq or Afghanistan now numberingabout one million, perhaps as many as 100,000 soldiers will require long-term mental health care, assuming standard treatments. Close to 1000 soldiers have already had to be evacuated from the war theater because of mental status. On the other hand, PTSD may not surface until months after the return from combat duty.
Neurofeedback (EEG Feedback) is training in brain function based on information derived from the EEG (electroencephalogram). With such training, rapid recovery can be achieved for the relief of PTSD symptoms that include sleep problems, pain, irritability, anger and rage, as well as cognitive deficits. The training can also help soldiers recover from drug, alcohol, and tobacco dependency.
The training is based on reinforcement of better regulated brain behavior as judged by the EEG. The repetition of this exercise for a number of thirty-minute sessions leads typically to improved cognitive function and improved emotional control.
The work is success-oriented rather than deficit-focused. It is a fitness strategy that avoids the jargon of mental health, and suits the soldier’s natural orientation toward a training and fitness program.
Veterans who have been through the program have shown tremendous positive benefits. A veteran who had not slept more than 2 hours at a time was sleeping through the night after just 7 sessions, without medication. This same veteran had avoided the movie theater because that was the location of his first flashback. After 12 sessions, he saw a movie for the first time in 8 years. Another veteran was able to save his marriage and family by calming down his anger and his need to control everything. Behaviors that had been appropriate in wartime were destroying his home life. Veterans are getting their lives back with Neurofeedback. Even a veteran from WWII found his sleep restored after not having slept well since 1945.
Substantial functional recoveries and even functional enhancements are routine. We urge veterans to avail themselves of this free service. There is no need to live with nightmares, flashbacks, loss of emotional control, lack of energy, and inability to plan for the future. Even chronic pain can be substantially helped. And if you are suffering physical injuries, your brain should not also be your problem. When it comes to symptoms you have not had before, stop thinking it's you. Start thinking it may just be a matter of your brain, and that remedies are available and highly accessible. (P.S. The VA offers only very limited access to neurofeedback at this time.)
For additional information, including the latest Neurofeedback news and training courses, please visit EEG Info at www.eeginfo.com
The EEG Institute (www.eeginstitute.com) offers a variety of brain wave training programs for adults and children. Our staff is also involved in teaching professionals throughout the world who want to incorporate Neurofeedback into their practices. The Brian Othmer Foundation seeks to make Neurofeedback training available to under-served populations.

FYI, Dr. Othmer is currently working with the VA on techniques that have proven results, and the NIH (National Institute of Health) is also considering funding more research into his program.
If the current Congressional Session, which has just begun, gets enough calls, emails and
and letters sent them, the already written legislation to fund programs such as this, will get passed by the Congress and Senate. (See my post of 202 Bills on this group).
The DAV site: www.standup4vets.org is a good place to make your position known, as they have a list of bills that need passing, and the info to get your own legislators the message, by signing the DAV petitions.

Thank you ladies, as your posts have kept this current, and I know that there are many Vets who just won't post on this, as it is personal to them.
I respect that, but I wish more would take a moment to just 'BTT' some of the informative Veterans'[blocked site] that I know is vital to all Veteran's futures.

Just a thought...
I'd like to hear/read more and see the understanding of how our neural systems function... spread.
Use of the vehicle/body.system can be optimized as understanding of function increases...
Everything trains the brain... so to speak...
all experience causes neural firing patterns to develop which establish "ways" or "pathways" or "increasingly familiar sequential patterns of metabolizing"... neural infra-structure...
most occur without any conscious awareness of the brain and nerve system growth that is occurring, being established... the demands for and disbursal of nutrient, metabolites, salts, sugars...
some delivery pathways become well developed under extreme or abnormal stress and later, when unneeded result in overwhelming or inappropriate, socially unacceptable behavioral responses
the trail thru the brush, thru the thick growth of the neural "forest"... opens with use and reuse...
one might slip quietly thru barely leaving a mark...
or one might drive a huge truck thru and beat a pathway that invites all comers...
the nature of the experience and the resulting pathway will vary.
otherwise hardly associated neural traffic after the event may also vary as per the routes established during the event.
Purposefully developing new ways and/or altering existing ways may be done with guided biofeedback experiences
i want to know more
thanks for spreading this news about the work being done to manage these neural pathways (that have been forced into existence under harsh conditions) ...in a purposeful manner.
Once again,
I want to know more.
Substance abuse and the reliance on pharmaceuticals seems to create other complicating problems in the long run.
Biofeedback and self-management ultimately empower the individual to manage their own body vehicle.

My 'other' computer has all my medical pdf files, and thousands of studies on the brain, functions, neural pathways, stimuli, effects of smoking, cell phones (microwaves), and a plethora of information.
I have a list of hundreds of Ph.D.'s on file who are world class professors that usually head up a university either in the US or Europe.
But off the top of my head, I would suggest you Google Dr. Henry Lai, Ph.D. - Prof. at Washington University, or Dr. George L. Carlo, Ph.D.,M.S. J.D at: www.safewireless.org, or www.emfacts.com, for some eye-opening information on brain function and cell phone affects on the brain.
Another time, I will provide you a list that will keep you busy for a few years, as it did me in compiling it. Google The Bioinitiative Report for some studies and names of prominent Ph.D.'s in brain science, brain tumors, cognitive effects of stimuli, etc....
Didn't know you had an interest in such, as I have refrained from posting anything of this nature on DH, as I didn't think many would appreciate it.

kind of like driving a car....
most any knucklehead can take one from the new car lot and cruise around town...
...but a good greasemonkey can adjust and fine tune...
maybe install a few after market pieces...
do some machine work and enhance performance...
what the hey!
clean water and fresh air,
6 square meals a day,
early to bed and early to rise...
and
a few months of Marine Corps Basic would help optimize a lot of 2-legged jalopies!
Having fun yet?!
Thanks, Eagle.

Hey, just trying to keep it 'real' enough for most.
Got to keep tunin the carbs and changin the plugs if you want some good trap times!
Brain science is making huge leaps, and I get a lot of info on the AM radio when George Noory has a Ph.D. in Neuroscience on, and I tape the shows, as I do when any top specialist in any field is on.
Got about 3,000 now, and can barely store the damn things.
www.coasttocoastam.com is the most listened to talk radio station in the world, and you likely know of it, but if you don't, your missing out on some great information. Go to the site, and on the left is "affiliates", click and find your area, and there will be a station you can pick up. It's worldwide, so you should have no problem.
