of Corn?

I have been in the city way to long... since my move, I'll be seeing a bit more of the country. Maybe, I could use a lesson or two. Standing at the roadside veggie stand, I was pulling back the husks on the corn. I remember doing this as a younger person to make sure the corn was ripe, full, and had no worms. The owner of the stand came up to me and asked me WHY I did that and WHAT I was expecting to find.

I promptly stated the WHY as above and as for the WHAT... I said I expected to find the great quality of corn that he had for sale. HE SMILED

What are some other things that I may have to look for when doing business at roadside stands?

Yes, you can, marine! Just kidding! I was born and raised in Nebraska, corn has been a big part of my past. Travis Tritt wrote a song that kind of describes me. The produce that you find at the non-commercial stands you run across will have the best tasting fruits and veggies you will ever find. These folks were growing organically, way before it was in vogue. Supermarkets are one thing, but at the stand you can actually smell the freshness. Ever eaten a tomato grown in a controlled environment? Tasted like water, didn't it? Good luck!

I don't live in prime corn country but we've had small patches over the years.

What i always heard for the store corn
was to pull back some at the end and bare a few kernels...

then press in with the thumb nail on one of those bared kernels...

if it pops and squirts out...

then the kernel is full and juicy and the squirt comes from the ready pressure...

the others just kind of have a go nowhere rupture of the cell..

Also have to be careful as some of what is bought in some grocery stores isn't real sweet corn, but some variety of field corn instead. Or at least, a poor variety of sweet corn without much flavor. Best sweet corn I ever tasted came off of my Uncles sweet corn fields in South Central Minnesota where a lot of sweet corn canning is done for Del Monte, jolly green giant, etc.

Ever been to an uptown deli?

Those seeds are high protein!

Sprinkle a little of that salt on them that the sea men brought back from the last voyage on the rising main,

Then put them in the oven just long enough... test them, you can tell when they're purrrfect!

Yeah, then you eat them, munch on them slow like corn nuts...

Those workers look German... they know what to do with good seed!

In fact I recognize that fellow with the jack hammer... why his mom could do magic with good ripe seed!

... but then that's another story.

Ok, seriously, There is no exact rule on buying produce. Melons need to be firm. Corn needs to be juicy. With corn, peel back the husk a bit. Stick your thumb nail into a kernel. It should squirt at you. Carrots should be solid.
There are different ways for different foods.......

Mornin All!
timid if you like cucumbers, stay away from the very large ones, they tend to be dry, and woody.
the smaller ones are more succulent and sweet.
Tis true.
