OK, so here's a thread for general discussion about baseball. Major league, minor league, as long as it's baseball it's on topic. Smack talk is okay but if it turns into a fight it will have to stop there. Right now the playoffs are on, the LCS will be coming up and then the WS and then the Hot Stove League as teams reload for next year. There's always something to talk about with baseball even in the dead of winter so this thread should be an active one. Or post trivia questions on baseball and see who can get the answers the fastest.
This post will establish the thread, I'll start talking baseball next post. Have at it!

"Change hit in the air to deep right field! Back goes Clemente...at the wall...she's gone!"
There's the first trivia question. That was a radio announcer's call of a game-tying postseason home run. Who broadcast that call, and who hit the home run he was calling?

OK, the announcer was Al Michaels on WLW radio in Cinci before he got famous working on TV. The homer was hit by Johnny Bench of the Cincinnati Reds to tie the fifth and final game of the 1972 NLCS in the ninth inning. The Reds went on to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3.
Michaels' call of the game winning play:
"The stretch and the 1-2 pitch to McRae. In the dirt—it's a wild pitch! Here comes Foster! The Reds win the pennant!"

Anybody care to bet how long Manny Ramirez lasts in LA? Sure they love him now with the Dodgers in the playoffs, but wait until he loafs down to 1st on a grounder or half asses it after a fly ball. Or another so-called injury. He screwed the Indians when he left Cleveland, he screwed Boston, - do I see a pattern developing? His act will get old real quick with Joe Torre!

Manny is not a Torre kind of guy! He'll be out of there and heading for NY after the season.

The first time I read this I must have been half asleep. Waida Minnit! You met Frank Robinson? (manykisses turns green with envy)
Absolute worst trade the Reds ever made: F. Robby to the Orioles for Milt Pappas, Jack Baldschun, and D*ck Simpson. Robinson won the Triple Crown, the Orioles won the World Series, and the Reds won the right to call themselves the team that made what may have been baseball's all time dumbest deal.
Welcome, welcome, welcome! And I do soooo have a soft spot in my heart for a woman who knows the intricacies of this, the greatest game of all.
As for the guys commenting on Manny...I was not at all surprised at how he tore up NL pitching after the trade, he's an elite hitter and a lot of the guys in the NL had never pitched to him. They'll adjust eventually, he's not going to hit .400 next year, but he will still be among the best in the game.
I think the Dodgers will try to keep him. I think the Dodgers' organization has gotten very underrated over the years because they have exercised financial restraint, but the truth is that they probably have the resources to outbid anybody in baseball if they want to. I think their main competition will come from the Mets. It will come down to whether or not Frank McCourt gives Ned Colletti the blank check for Manny or not. Given that they've already collected some pretty expensive players (Andruw Jones, Nomar, Kent, Furcal, Maddux, others), I'm inclined to think McCourt's a lot closer to a Steinbrenner as an owner than a Peter Angelos. I think there's a good chance Manny stays in L.A.

Next worse Reds Trade? Tony Perez & Will McEnaney to Montreal for Woody Fryman & Dale Murray. I cried at that one!

LOL...I thought the next worst Reds trade was Paul O'Neill and - I forget the name of the minor leaguer who went with him - to the Yankees for the husk of Roberto Kelly.
But yeah...Perez and McEnaney for Fryman and Murray - another instance where the Reds traded away a HOF'er and got bupkis in return. Nine seasons later the guy still hit .328 with an OPS+ well above league average.
At least Walt Jocketty won't do stuff like this...will he?

The Deads (I mean Reds) screwed Tony twice. Once in 76 & then firing him, after only 44 games as manager. My trivia question. Name the 1st player ever to serve as DH for the National League.

You can't get that question past a Reds fan. It was Dan Driessen in the '76 World Series.
But who was the first manager to use his DH as a pitcher?
Drumr might get this one...

Sounds like an Earl Weaver thing, but i doubt it was really him.
A real question, not trivia. Who got the 1st hit as a DH once it was implemented (a sad day in baseball, JMO)in '69?
