this time of year one of the easiest little time fillers is applesauce and cinnamon cut outs or balls. They smell so wonderful and are great fun.
I find it easiest to start with the cinnamon and add enough apple sauce to make it about the same as sugar cookie dough. rollout to about 1/4 " cut in what shapes you like and let air dry. Don't forget to put in hole if you want to be able to hang. For balls I make them about 1" and they will take longer to dry, but will do so....nice to tuck in here and there around the house.

I'm not sure of the ages of the children, but there are tons of things that you can do with them and they will have a blast. Crayola makes a wonderful non-staning foam clay that will air dry; you can have them make all kinds of beads for necklaces and strange little animals. It will take 4 or 5 days for them to dry completly.
Something else you might want to consider. Go to the dollar store, you will find all kinds of craft item from feathers and beads to wood cutouts and paints. I enjoy painting toy soldiers and I first got started by going to the dollar store and buying cheap army men and practicing on them. If you had an okder grandson 9 or 10 he might enjoy that. Foam sheets are available there as well use those to make books. Fold the foam sheet in half and take several sheets of paper teice the size of the foam sheets and fold them as well. Place them between the foam and stich down the back, that way they have thier own little diary book or journal.
This is just a few ideas I don't want to bore you but I hope I gave you some good ideas about what to do.
