I was talking to a friend the other day, about the horrible treatment some of our veterans receive on a regular basis. He pointed something out to me that really upset me... he said if we were out somewhere and some guy was to threaten me, his reaction would be to do as he was trained, and at least hurt this guy. The part that upset me was when he told me that there are a large number of veterans in jail for this sort of thing, because "they should have better self control". I'm sorry, but first and foremost, if someone defends me, I am going to stand up for them... and not just sit back and watch him or her go to jail for defending me.... 
Any of you experience something like this or know someone who has?????

tough to comment when i have no facts on the cases you mentioned doing jailtime. always two sides to every story and obviously a few juries saw it differently than you do. as for being trained to defend, the hand to hand training i've seen in the military would get me messed up pretty bad if i used it in a streetfight. so much for, "these hands must be registered as lethal weapons." lol.

This happens more than you know, if your around a VA all week like I am and know a lot of veterans, you would hear and even experience this sort of behavior as myself has........

Most of the ones in jail, killed the person not just hurt them. It may have been a knee jerk reaction, but doesn't make it right. That being said you shouldn't have messed with a vet.

shanahan, well I dont know about most of them killing someone, what I have heard is that they kicked some or a lot of ass, and normally it was more than just 1 on 1. But true what you have said, shouldn't have messed with a vet, worse combat vet!!

I was talking long term jail, most of us have seen the brig for a few hours for a fight in our early years lol.

Yeah I hear ya, most spend some time in county cause the judge's just dont care that when vets are backed up in the corner, we do what we were trained to do, people just don't understand, but they sure has hell love the freedom they have cause of us brother !!

This morning i was at the bus stop when, a Vet wearing an Army cap approached. He asked me for a light for his cigarette. I politely did so. After a minute or so, his cigarette went out. He then turned to a group sitting on the bench and asked them for a light. He was met with discuss as they realized that this man had a disability. As they gave him a light, he said..."as a veteran, i thank you". Their responce was to say that they didn't give a damn about any veterans for long ago and, stood up. I could see that the vet was a litte taken by their responce and jerked back as these "gang-bangers" threatened to "knock him out". I turned and stepped between them and said... "that if they did that then i was going to have to return the favor". One of these fellows looked up at my cap and, exclaimed something about how this guy was harassing them. I told them that they were full of it and, that he was leaving...now. I further explained that this gentleman was quite possibly that way because of his experiences as a soldier. I then explained that he may very well be the reason that you can sit on that seat in peace..."He deserves your respect not your imature attitutes. I walked away behind my fellow vet and sat with him awaiting our busses.
The thugs that walk our streets have no idea about such things. They have never and probably WILL never serve, read about or give a care about those who have sacrificed themselves for our country. God bless that Vet...i hope i run into him tomarrow.

The sad, but true fact is that Soldiers are very much appreciated now. Tomorrow, they won't be. When freedom is on the line, Americans rely on the Soldier. Once freedom is achieved, the Soldier is forgotten. It's a fact of life.
Most of us remember the footage of the POW, kissing the ground when he got off of the plane in the USA. Does anyone remember his name?
Years ago, we all wore bracelets, bearing the name of an MIA. We protested and waved our bracelets! Do you remember the Soldiers name on your bracelet?
It's one thing to sit back and do nothing. It's another thing to b*tch and complain, and STILL do nothing!

It's so ironic. I came to Idaho in 1983, back then the Military was a pain in the a** to Idaho.
Idaho was the last state to build a Veterans Cemetery. They completed the cemetery after Idaho soldiers were being killed in Irac.
At least we do have one now.
