 i just went to see the 5 day old calf at my daughters father in laws and it was passing blood he said its just worms his diet is only powdered milk and a can of cream they haven't gotten him calf milk yet why? dk...is there another reason this could be happening? and does he not need more nutrition from a calf formula?

 thanks vet i will pass on this info to my daughters father in law reminded me of my rabbit raising years some of my 4h'ers delt with coccidia this makes since when i go to the cattle auction and some pens the cattle are nothing but skin and bones and others are fat and healthy,

 Don't use powderd milk you buy at a grocery store go to a feed store and get the right stuff Caves do good on that and a little hay, very soon a little ground feed with corn would be good, Scours need treated or they die and may anyway puting in special electolights help you can buy them at a feed store to.

 their using regular humane powdered milk i hade an agument with my daughter on the way home i know calf milk from the feed store has what we used at the vets office when i was a vet tech all the nutrition and a colustrum they need in it i don't get these people here dogs run loose no inoculations no tags i was always asked when i got here why is he leashed beside him not knowing the word come being a terrier lol i don't want him lost in other peoples yards or dragging a deer carcus home like my neighbors dog which mine shared with her and was sick for 2 days

 yeah i did the once over with my daughter don'tknow much about calves but a baby is a baby he looks good other wise until the just plain blood poured out of his butt i'll check his color tomorrow didn't want to act like a know it all this man has raised many a calf but that doesn't mean shit!! RAISE A HEALTHY ONE! and its in his duck and turkey pen told him he better start mooing at it or its just gonna quack or gobble!

 I am no cow person so I can only relate to horses or dogs. Chicken poop carries salmonella. And the calf could have even contracted coccidiousous from that pen. Not likely though since it takes about a week to incubate. Babies have little or none immunity especially since you say it didn't get any colostrum from the mother. You will need albon and may have to give some pedialite or something for dehydration. Coccidiousis kills very very fast. Stress will make it even faster. As for the feeding I'd think you could get milk from another cow and bottle feed this baby.

 i said this today to my daughter this is cow country there are plenty of nursing cows here i didn't make it over there today making a point of it tomorrow and will let the guy know all of this,to me its just common sence a baby needs colustrum,i'm a breast feeding peer counciler a baby is a baby we're all mammals we all need the same thing if he has any chance of fighting off any paracite or illness give him the best start at life not the worst for some reason his mother didn't want him she was probally sick also

 its dark yellow like baby food and then just blood they got him at 2 days old went right on humane powdered milk said the feed store was out of calf milk he called today and said he's doing fine but to some people here fine is standing and walking thank you all for the advice so when i get my calves i know i'll be on the right track

 saw the little guy today he looks good bulling everyone lol they finally have him on calf manna and i ask if they tried any hay yet so he went and got him some he nusseled it and tried a piece still have him with the birds though, his bloody stool is gone thats good...

 an update on this little guy well he isn't very big at 5-6 weeks old and he only gets 4 bottles a day 2 in the morning and 2 at night barely eating grain and no hay, i've never had cows but i know he needs more to eat, my daughter and i told the owner he needs more he listened to us before but the calf is still in the bird pen supposedly they had wormed him, he's thin and his color is good..any advice would be helpful...thanks

 if that calf is still standing i would take the bottle away let it drink calf milk of formula out of a bucket drinking with head down is natural they get strangled on bottles because the head is elevated

 Too many bottles and too rich will cause scours. This guy needs to be following the mixing directions on the calf manna. And never should've used powdered milk intended for people. We only have 1 gut. If he's a cattleman, why does he not have somewhere else to pen the calf?

 he's not a cattle man he helps out a friend who raises cattle and they don't bother with the ones not wanted or the sickly ones so he takes them home, some of the older folks here still go by the old ways he stopped feeding the powdered milk the calfs ben on calf manna for a while now but in my eyes there is something wrong being in his chicken,turkey and duck pen is the problem, i'm heading to the farm store next week i'll ask up there what they think also..
