My 4-year old Thoroughbred/Trakehner cross is awesome, but I wish he'd quit growing Kern's very level headed, eager to please (I do natural horsemanship, using what works for me and not one individual program), and he loves people. When I turn him out, he stands at the gate until I leave the barn before joining the other horses.
His Trakehner bloodline is of the Erkonig foundation bloodline; Verwandtemonde is his father, and his grandfather is Polarmond. His granddam is one of the few Marduc daughters in America. Marduc received one of the highest ever 100-day stallion testing scores in Germany.
His dam (Roller's Final Notice--"Beamer": Heck, for what I've spent on horses, I could have afforded a Beamer) is TB (not for racing). Her Mom had a career in show jumping and then fox hunting before I got her. She had been kept up 24/7 but has lived quite a different life since I got her. She has balance and lots of pasture time now
Verwandtesudwind ("Kern"--the core, the heart of the matter) has that Polarmond trot --it's huge! Will I show him in dressage? Maybe; I showed his grandmother. But if all he ever becomes is my handsome trailriding horse, I don't think he'll really care.

When I was growing up, my Dad owned a QH named Leo Tiger Bar. I can't remember his exact lineage, but I know that both Leo and Doc Bar are in there somewhere... I think they were his grandfathers. I do know that his father was Tiger Leo, who I believe was double Leo bred. I'm pretty sure that his Mom's dad was Doc Bar.
Anyway, our Leo was the BEST horse we ever owned. Us kids weren't allowed to ride him until we were in our early teens. I remember that it was a GREAT honor to get to ride Leo! He had speed... and heart.

Other than my first pony, all my horses have been thoroughbreds from off the track. I have 3 tb geldings that live on my small farm with me. We've been together for 15 years. I love the intelligence and spirit of a tb. They all have great bloodlines. One is a Secretariat, one is a Man O' War(with collapsed suspensories) and the other is a Vigors. Guess what? Bloodlines mean NOTHING is they are not winning.
Most people don't have the skill or patience to work these guys. They also have more active metabolisms requiring more feed to maintain. You do not put 30, 60 or 90 days into one and have a horse that's ready to go.
Most people only see the front of the racetrack. They don't see what happens when these horses are not winning or of use. Yes, I know there are some trainers that "try" to find good homes. There are only so many good homes and the economy is in the toilet. Unfortunately, so many of these beautiful creature wind up in terrible situations or in a slaughter house.
Additionally, I think backyard breeding should be banned.

If your a horse person and works there horses all the time, daily is best this is good.
The novist rider that rides occasonaly is asking for posible trubble.
Anything less frequent in care or riding is trubble.
In my small comunity in the 60 years I have ben hear I can reacal 12 childen killed by horses in ages 8 to 11 or so. in 1930 I had an uncle killed in a runaway team farming.
His brother my dad allways said if you own a horse you must work it everyday or you should not own it.
Can't tell you I belived my dad the 1st time I hear him say it as he did many times, but today I would say he was right on target.

Ive been riding and training horses most of my life, from the backyard neighbors' to some of the best flat racers and steeplechasers. It's not only bloodlines that make the best horse, but in whose hands they are given. Ive seen the babies grow up on the farm, come to the training tracks, get thrown into the wrong hands with the wrong rider, and they lose it. Horses as a whole have such a big heart, they want to please us, but the horse and rider must be compatible for such a bond to exist. I love my quarter horses, including the appendixes, for their intelligence and heart and stamina. I was being put on the back of a horse before i could walk, I spent alot of my childhood sittin under a cedar tree just watching them on their own, and more than once they've saved my life- literally. The bond between horse and rider, when they are compatible, is an amazing sight.

well you right the more you work a horse the better he is but i drive a truck gone a good bit ,the walkings horses ,mabey they are not quite as high strung . i know i can leave my horses in the field not ride them fo r a year go get them up an ride, done this a lot with brood mares, a horse you have to ride ever day to keep them in line is not a good horse although i agree that any horse, the more they are rode or work the better they become, prouble if thy broke right to start with they good for a long time. about breaking horses if 3 or 4 hrs a day of riding for 30 days dont break a horse you got wrong blood line

Maybe I am kinda slow here, But I love the half breeds, quarter-arab. they tend to have the heart of the quarter, the kindness of the quarter, and the beauty and stanima of the arabs. I have rasied them for years. But the the price falling as it has, I do that no more. But I ride them. I chase cows, I rope, Run barrels, parade, the whole ball of wax, with my little ole quarbs, No better horse in my book. ty

I so agree with you. Money keeps this horrible sport going. Racing such young immature horses is wrong. It's all about greed. And one in a hundred stallions should be kept a stallion. The standardbreds are on the same route as far as racing and discarding and even Arabians and quarterhorses are in there.

He brings out the best in me, and he teaches me alot about myself, and has helped in my healing after loosing my husband to cancer. What a wonderful animal. after riding practically every breed...
all i like is the one's that have limited bad habits...(cause every horse has something)
can walk when i tell it to walk
gallop when i say gallop
and woe means stop...!
my days of being smashed, stepped on, bucked off, flipped over on, broken crushed body parts rubbed against anything that doesn't move... and grabbing the bit and running...
is OVER...
so an older broke gelding that has been taught some manners...
doesn't matter what it looks like either anymore...
just that it rides nice...

There are so many great and beautiful horses, aren't there? Friesians and Arab's are beautiful - but I have never been around them. My first was a Shetland pony - talk about stubborn. But I learned a lot from her! We also had an Appaloosa, she was great. I now have Percheron's for my business and have fallen completely in love with the breed. My biz partner has Morgan's and I have a few. They are an incredible breed, they are very versatile. My favorite horse is a cross between the two. I have a 2 year old Perch/Morgan that has the best disposition I have ever seen. He is loving and has the desire to please. He is like a big dog in that he follows you around and always wants you to scratch and rub on him. He will even lie down near you if you are working. My kids and I will lay over him and with him and he is not fazed in the least. I intend to train him to get down for me to mount him as he is going to be a big boy and I am a short girl!

Well I was a city slicker cousin that went to stay with country cousins in the summer just so they could get the horse out for me. I loved horses!! Shetlands then. My one cousin had a pony and we were told not to walk in front of him.. What did I do?? Yep.. and it ran right over me! So they gave it to another cousin and she spent so much time with that horse that when I went out there we could ride it with no saddle or bridle and go on picnics up the road.. She could lay under that horse and it would not step on her. I learned then it was how you treated a critter and time spent that proved the quality of that animal. My husbands family had a Welch pony that we rode back when. My sister in law and I bought a half Quarterhorse and half Arabian filly at an auction without permission from the Patriarcs of our family that had to come and get her. She was high strung and we did not have the knowledge to train her well.. So to ride her was to take your life in your hands..She would walk or trot away from the farm.. but you better be holding on when you turned her around cuz she didnt stop till she got you to the barn. And eventually we realized she needed someone more qualified than us for training. So we got some donkeys instead! They were fun too. Favorite Breed? I love to watch the BIG ones in parades ect.. or any well trained one.

I have to say that my favorite breed is the half arabian horses I like th QH and arabian crosses a lot you get the best of both worlds, in one horse. My Big half Arabian stands almost 16H and is a line back dun, with all the markings he has been shown arabian and QH style halter, western pleaseure, hunter, trail classes, show hack, Driving, sidesaddle, and has been used as a lesson horse and a hands on demo horse for the MGH special equestrian theripudic riding program for the staff for driving clinic we gave.
He also pulls a swisher bush hog to do his part on pasture maintace, and I had started him team penning and I had ropped my first calf off of him! (the funny things was I was leagley blind when I roped the calf and he did the rest like he had done it all his life, one cool horse I post some photos of him on my profile.
