Remember the black lights at the clubs? We wore painted flowers on our cheeks, and danced the night away.............

Started my family in 1970... all I could think about was my new born son growing up. being drafted and going to Vietnam... and not coming back... and I started to wonder...for what?

We lived through some terrible and dynamic times in the sixties and seventies. We disagreed with our parents value systems... let's face it, many of us were brought up with prejudices against races, nationalities, religions and were taught to be homophobic. Our generation was a part of profound changes in this country and I think we will continue to make "firsts" as we go forward.

The Civil Rights Movement in our country motivated change in Women's Rights, Peoples with Disabilities Rights, Aging Legislation, Voting Rights, Race, Age and Gender discrimination.

Some people were "out there" spending their time "wasted" others were protesting and working for change and others were listening and learning.

Had the long straight hair, wore the hip hugger bell bottoms and midriff top, listened to the music and watched my President assassinated.

Most of us Baby Boomers were and remain normal everyday people trying to make our way in the world and live the American Dream. Hippies were a minority that managed to get headlines. Many of their leaders faded away some dying peniless (Abby Hoffman). The Summer of Love (as I recall 1967) the Beatles made a pilgrimage of sorts to Height Ashbury. They left commenting hippies were nothing but a bunch of dirty teenage droputs. The horror of Charles Manson more or less ended this short-lived era. The media and Hollywood distort fact. For example, a generation before the boomers there were dance hall girls where one paid to dance with them. Women who worked in these places were generally on the low end of the food chain. If you were to believe Hollywodd and the media they would make you think that in the Great Depression almost all women worked in dance halls. This is simply not true no more than most Baby Boomers were hippies. As for me, I fought in a war and continued my military career. I am proud I served in a war but if I could do it over and had a choice I would pass on that one but not the military career. I had no idea my military retirement and benefits would be until years later and I am very grateful I have them.

I think most of us would like to put the negative side of the 60s and 70s behind us. What I mean are hippies, JFK assassination, M.L. King assassination, RFK assassination, the Vietnam War and how it divided us, Watergate, the failed Carter Presidency, the Pueblo Incident, fuel crises, and the list goes on and on. We are still smarting from the failed Carter Presidency that I fear some day will mean a war in Iran that will probably have to be a flow blown NATO operation. This is what I think of hippies=

thanks GAry, I didn't get into the sixty thing because I married young and had my first baby in 1960, to busy trying to figure that thing out. new wife ,new mother. first time away from home and family. I was raise pretty strict but not with a firm hand, very loving folks, also being the youngest helped a lot. I have 1 brother and 1 sister so by the time I came along , I guess my parents were just tired so I did get kinda spoiled but still knew the rules as they laid them out. didn't do drugs ,and getting married as young as I did I sure didn't get into the freesex thing, too busy enjoying the guy I married.I did however go the hiphugger, long hair bit. loved the music of that ear as wacky as it was,or so it seems today. boy some of of those lyrics.... but at least they were not dirty talking,as with some of the rap music we have to endear today, of course I anm into good old country music now, but cut my teeth on good ole rock and roll, now the fifties those were the days. But no, I wouldn't go back there either.JUDY
